Pre-race routine:

Woke at 4am - did I really even sleep? Ate multigrain bagel with jelly. I showered and left hotel just after 5am. Got my usual iced coffee at DD on my way to Seneca Lake. I racked my bike Saturday night so setting up transition was a breeze. I actually checked it over ten times becasue it seemed to easy!
Event warmup:

I stayed loose by walking around. I got into the water for a few minutes prior to the pre-race instructions. This is the most nerve racking part for me-those 10-15 minutes while you are waiting to start. Up to that point, I didn't feel too many nerves this time.
Swim
  • 53m 28s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 32s / 100 yards
Comments:

I started swimming right away. It was shallow enough to walk quite a bit of the first part-but I needed to get into my swimming zone to relax. Which I did and I just kept swimming! I did not stop until the end. The water was incredibly warm, maybe too warm! While I actually added 3 minutes to my swim time over last year, I felt still like I was a stronger swimmer this year.
What would you do differently?:

I might have been better off walking the first part as opposed to swimming. For me, it probably would've been faster which could've been those extra 3 minutes from last year. I guess I need to work on my swimming pace as well. I also need to learn how to draft. I kept trying but I couldn't keep up!
Transition 1
  • 02m 51s
Comments:

I think it went well. The wet suit came off fine and I didn't have to put socks on so I was all set.
What would you do differently?:

I guess just practice getting it done even quicker!
Bike
  • 3h 17m 29s
  • 56.09 miles
  • 17.04 mile/hr
Comments:

Good bike! I did it in 3:30 last year so I cut time off this year. The first 30 miles or so I carried an average of about 17.8 mph. After the tough climb, I dropped it a little. But my overall pace was 17.1 which it was 16.0 last year!
It felt good to be able to pass so many riders (too many too count). I was sure to give a "on your left" and a "good morning" as I rode by. I knew that many of them would pass me on the run so I wanted to keep things on a friendly note!
What would you do differently?:

I probably couldv'e pused even a little more without too much impact on the run. I also will drink more too! I think while I took frequent drinks, I didn't drink enough to compensate for the heat.
Transition 2
  • 02m 11s
Comments:

This was a good T2 time. All I had too do was switch shoes, grab a race belt and off I went. I was actually 15/55 in my age group for T2 and 248/794 overall!
What would you do differently?:

Maybe learn how to get out of shoes before exiting bike?? I don't know though, that seems pretty fancy for me!
Run
  • 2h 35m 8s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

Well.... I actually thought I was running a better race then I did. I think the heat played a huge role in that. I started off strong and I slowed up as the course got more challenging. I tried to keep wealking breaks to aid stations and the couple of tougher hills to conserve energy. My garmin was not set right from the beginning so I didn't really know my total time. I kept an eye on pace but didn't want to focus too much on that. I did one gel and 1 pouch of gel blasts, but that was it except for the G2 in the beginning I brought with me and some water on the course.
The locals were out with their garden hoses so that and sponges helped keep a bit cooler.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more in the beginning (and nutrition). Maybe I should've taken a few more walk breaks early on so I could be stronger at the finish. Overall, it was par for me and it was a minute better than last year's run so I guess that's ok. It is all about progression right?
Post race
Warm down:

After crossing the line and meeting up with friends, I sat down for a few minutes and drank some water. My stomach wasn't asking for any food at the time but I tried to eat a bit anyway. A couple of trips to the bathroom and I was ready! We had to drive home from Geneva (about 2.5 hours) so I needed to stretch a little more than usual from sitting so soon after. I feel great today:)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I limit my own ability to perform faster! That is my focus to push harder. Although, with Beach 2 Battleship coming up in 124 days I should focus on endurance and getting across that finish line!

Event comments:

I do enjoy this race. It is a fun time, lots of people around in the park and the location can't be beat. If I don't do Lake Placid next year I will definitely be racing Musselman again. Maybe I will even do the Double Mussel!
