Pre-race routine:

Slept as late as possible. No breakfast. Hydrated a bit.
Event warmup:

Swam 5 minutes in the lap lane area.
Swim
  • 08m 20s
  • 400 yards
  • 05s / 100 yards
Comments:

First time doing mass start mid pack. Wasn't warmed up enough and breathing got shallow for a bit but got through it. Pack was a bit congested at the first turn.
What would you do differently?:

Risk going for the warmup too soon rather than too late. A few hundred extra yards won't make me tired enough to affect my time. A panic attack sure can.
Transition 1
  • 03m 30s
Comments:

Took my time changing. Easy gains for later events.
What would you do differently?:

Get a tri top to wear under the suit. Rack my bike better so I don't have to wrestle it out from under the rack.
Bike
  • 28m 12s
  • 9.5 miles
  • 20.21 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt like if I went much harder and went over the edge I'd need a lot of recovery time. Didn't feel super strong but was able to keep a good effort for ~30 minutes and still leave something for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Still can't make power in the drops and stay comfortable. Might want to work on that eventually.
Transition 2
  • 01m 10s
Comments:

Not bad. Most time was just getting to the rack spot and then getting to the run exit.
Run
  • 27m 20s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

Pretty good for me at the back end of an hour long effort. 9:00 pace at first trending down to 7:30 in the last half mile.
What would you do differently?:

More bricks. They work. More running to get my run fitness back.
Post race
Warm down:

Cold oranges sliced into quarters are good.

Walked around. Packed up. Watched finishers from the other waves. Didn't win anything in the raffle, again.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Physiology.

Event comments:

Will definitely be doing this race again. Nice convenient measuring stick. Good local brick workout.
