Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5ish. My wave wasn't until 8 so we didn't eat right away. Mixed bottles, grabbed breakfast to eat in the car and we were out. We ate in the parking garage. Applesauce, banana, and some protein. Then it was off to transition. It wasn't a clean transition which I found odd but it only took a few minutes to set up and then I went and chilled at the CyTri tent. About the time they announced transition was closing I looked down and my running shoes were still on my feet. Oops. I had to sprint back into transition and put them by my bike as I was being shooed out by a volunteer. Then I just sat on my bum until it was time to head to the swim start.
Event warmup:

Nothing really. Wetsuit wrestling?
Swim
  • 40m 45s
  • 1931 meters
  • 02m 07s / 100 meters
Comments:

Poor performance here. Just wasn't up to par. Pretty rough start. Lots of hand to hand combat and people swimming damn near sideways. Some dummy to my right tried to turn 3 buoys short of the first turn buoy and I Tboned him. The back stretch wasn't bad and neither was the end. Just took a while to get going.
What would you do differently?:

Think about starting position. Should have started by the dock to get a decent line on the first buoy.
Transition 1
  • 04m 58s
Comments:

Weird transition set up IMO. With a long shoot to get into the far end and then having to go back to the opposite end for the shoot to get out of T1.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Strip my own wetsuit.
Bike
  • 2h 41m 34s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.80 mile/hr
Comments:

Good ride. Should have gone maybe a little harder. I've been know to go really overcook a bike so I was hesitant to go too hard. My only complaint is the water stations. I know they are volunteers, but how do you not have any Perform out and only water? I had to come to a dead stop twice for someone to go back and get a bottle. Crazy. Other than that it was a really crowded course given.
What would you do differently?:

Ride maybe a touch harder.
Transition 2
  • 02m 45s
Comments:

Good T2. Was in and out in a decent time so I felt like I forgot something.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Run
  • 1h 48m 37s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt good most the way. There was a point on the third loop when my stomach cramped a little, but all in all a good run. Heat was a bugger on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Run harder the last loop.
Post race
Warm down:

Water, water, water, and talking to friends and teammates.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not much. Haven't trained at above IM pace much recently so the top gears were hard to reach for me.

Event comments:

Good race for me overall. First HIM where I felt like I could run to my potential coming off the bike. We'll see how IMTX goes, but I really like this distance and my decide to focus on it.
