Pre-race routine:

My goal for this race is PR (sub 4:21). But really I want 4:15. My stretch goal is to come in at a 9:30 pace (per my watch).

On Friday evening, we went Mellow Mushroom for a pre race meal.

On Saturday morning, I got up at 5:00 for the 6:30 race start, lubed up liberally and then ate a bagel with peanut butter and a banana and drank a bottle of camelbak elixir.
Event warmup:

The hotel that I stayed at was walking distance to the start and the were opening up the breakfast area early for runners. I wandered on down there and loitered with the rest of of the runners, sipped some coffee and made use of the indoor facilities.

At about 5:45 I meandered toward the start. It was 39 out and I had on a light polartec-type jacket that I planned to check. Garmin, check. Sunglasses, check. Race belt and bib, check. Nutrition, check.

Comments:

The course started at Broadway at the Beach, headed south toward the airport and then went north on Ocean Boulevard from mile 8 to mile 17. We ran by the beachfront properties and through some neighborhoods and had glimpses of the ocean throughout this section. The course then headed back south to finish at the minor league ballpark across from Broadway at the Beach.

It was 39 and just getting light at 6:30 when the race started. It was 51 and sunny with a 10 mph wind when I finished. A front came through and it started to rain at about 2:00. Fortunately, most of the runners should have been off the course by then. It got much colder that night and actually snowed in Myrtle Beach! So glad that it was a Saturday race!

The marathon went well. I went out above pace for the first mile and I was good with that. I know that I get wound up and plan to take it down a notch after that. I told myself to settle in for the next bit. It’s just another long run, etc. I did that and just ran comfortably and took water when they offered it at the even mile markers and had my Gu every five miles as planned and check my watch. 9’s. Huh. Well, the heart rate is good. Just run comfortably. It’s just another long run. Still 9s. I got to the halfway mark and I said to myself, maybe I can run 4 after all. I got to mile 16 and I thought to myself, where is the 4 hour pace group? I felt really good until maybe mile 22. About then we got on a paved greenway for 1.5-2 miles and it was boring and the people around me were annoying me and I just wanted off of that greenway and I just wanted to be done.

While on the greenway, someone behind me starts to yell,

"Can't stop me! Can't stop me!"

"Can't stop me!"

"Ugh! Ugh! Ugh!"

"Can't stop me!"

He's only a little bit behind me and he passes me and I see it's a young guy with a Marines shirt and and iPod. Oh, that's "singing."

Still, very weird and annoying.

I sped up to get away from him. I was very glad to be off that path.

I finished my gun time was probably about 4:00:09 based on Kevin’s photos. Chip time 3:59:something

Note that I said “based on Kevin’s photos.” They did not get a finish time for me off the chip. They still have not posted a finish time for me. I have been assured repeatedly that the time will be posted today. They have redundant systems, blah blah blah. One timing company person tried to blame me saying that maybe it was a problem with my race belt. Huh. Runners were race belts. The technology to get peoples times when they are wearing race belts exists. They have not on course nutrition until mile 16 so you kinda have the carry it somewhere if you want it. The timing situation kinda put a damper on my mood. Still, I loved the event itself. The logistics were phenomenal. Kevin and I had a fun weekend. I may be crazy but if they can sort out the timing situation, I’d go back again next year. Is that nuts?

Anyway, the timing company did get my time and once I got them on email, the process was quick and painless. It was very stressful until I finally heard from them via email though.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing at the time.

Knowing what I know now, maybe run with a belt that does not have a pocket in the front?
Post race
Warm down:

I found Kevin in the finish area and he took some photos. I had my finishers photo taken and then went to check my time. They did not have it and said to check online. I went back and talked to them when my time did not show up and I was assured that if would be listed in the final results, that they had redundant systems and would get it from video. I do not appear in the 'final' results.

I have contacted Precision by email as well as seeing them in person as soon as I realized what happened. It goes without saying that I kind of upset about the situation. This should not be the stressful time if the event. It is especially upsetting knowing that there have been past issues with timing at this event. I certainly hope that the situation is resolved.

It's now Monday (2/18) and they are saying that the final results will be updated today and I will be on them.

Event comments:

I loved the race! I could not give it a 5 due to the timing company and lack of on course nutrition.
