Pre-race routine:

Drove the 3 1/2 hours down to the race the day before. Arrived on site at 5pm on Friday and scouted the course and picked up the race bag. First thing I noticed was the height of the corn along the route and the lack of shade. Knowing the temps were approaching 100 for the next day the corn told me that there would be no breeze getting through the corn, and the heat/humidity radiating off the corn would be a concern. Also, the lack of trees/shade was setting up for a HOT day.

Finished scouting the course, then ate dinner and early to bed. 4am wakeup call was in my future.
Event warmup:

Arrived on site at 5am. Parked and prepped the bike under a cloudless pre-dawn sky. Noticed the number of stars in the sky and took the time to enjoy the view above.

Prepped the transition area and then hung around waiting for race start. Pre-race meeting 15 minutes prior to start and got a huge surprise... the RD was allowing wetsuits. I have NO IDEA how he got a water temp reading to allow them, but he's the boss. Switched plans and threw on the sleeveless just to add the buoyancy. Final check of gear and then headed to the water for the start.

Comments:

Swam slow. I knew it was going to be hot all day so I took the swim easy. Sighting worked very well until the end of the first/start of the second lap. At that point the buoy was directly into the rising sun. I could not see it at all, so I just headed for the sun.

Lots of athletes went wide to the left on the clockwise course, so the inside lane was open. Usually stay wide, but since it was open I took the inside line. Tired to draft a bit, but those ahead of me were having a harder time with navigation so I found myself going off line when I drafted. Decided to jut go easy and race my own line.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure. I think maybe not worry about drafting as much and just race my own line. I know drafting helps, but it only seems to work if you have a good drafting partner.
Transition 1
  • 02m 2s
Comments:

I wear socks on the bike and made 2 mistakes. First was when I got to transition my socks were inside out. Took time off to fix that. Second was I didn't clean my feet off well enough. This led to sand in my socks that bother me all race.
What would you do differently?:

Wipe off feet better and make sure socks are right side out.
Bike
  • 2h 58m 32s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.82 mile/hr
Comments:

Just took it easy and tried to save it for the run. Got hot on the bike so water at the aid stations to pour on my head and body while I drank my electrolyte replacement I brought with me. Also ate one ClifBar.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 2
  • 02m 19s
Comments:

T2 was fine. Took some extra time with the hat and fuel before I headed out
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - just do it quicker.
Run
  • 3h 17m 21s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 15m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

The heat got me. It was miserable. It was a combination of shuffle and walk the entire way. I was told temps were over 100 and with the humidity it must have been much worse with the heat index. I was just zapped after 1.5 miles in. I spent most of the time trying to douse myself with ice and water and doing mental games to make sure I was still "with it". Saw almost everyone walking/shuffling.

I was very tempted to drop after the first 6.5 miles, but decided I would use this as an opportunity to figure out what, if anything, I could do go get myself recovered. I did find out that I responded very well to Coke. So I will take that as my positive from the race.
What would you do differently?:

pray for cooler temps??
Post race
Warm down:

Sat in the lake to cool down and then rested under a grove of trees in the shade.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heat and a need for more run endurance.

Event comments:

I really liked this race. The location and the course. I like smaller, out of the way races. I would really like this to be a fall race. Maybe late september. that would be great. Most likely, I will be back again next year.
