Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4:00 a.m. Ate a banana, most of a Powerbar, and drank some Gatorade. Left for the race at 4:30. Got to transition at 5:00, and set everything up, even though I was still not awake. It took me a couple of times to double check, but eventually I got it all together. Don't forget the sunglasses and bike computer!!! Got my tire pressure checked, re-racked, and headed for a swim warmup.
Event warmup:

Stretched, swam to the first lifeguard stand, and came back. It was SO COLD coming out of that nice warm water! I chatted with a few others in my age group, and then got stung in the face by a bee! It didn't leave a stinger, so I didn't swell too badly, but it hurt so much! So there I was, waiting for my wave to start, freezing and dripping wet, holding ice on my face, and shivering uncontrollably.
Swim
  • 17m 31s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 20s / 100 meters
Comments:

There's no way that was only 750 meters! The Danskin race is 750, straight across the lake, and this is supposedly the same distance, almost all the way across and back. I'm not too sure about the accuracy. The sun was blinding on the way back, but I managed to draft a bit and let the person ahead of me "show" me where to go.
What would you do differently?:

Don't get stung in the face by a bee. Maybe start closer to the front. I may not be fast, but I LOVE swimming!
Transition 1
  • 02m 36s
Comments:

Didn't wear a wetsuit because I don't have one!!! I ran to the bike without any problems, but I couldn't see the "bike out" because my sunglasses fogged up. A volunteer pointed me in the right direction.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 40m 39s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 18.35 mile/hr
Comments:

The wind was strong at points, and the surface on 93rd is terrible, but I was HIGHLY satisfied with my ride. The bee sting was throbbing at this point, but I got through it.
What would you do differently?:

Get a faster bike! ...Oh, yeah...don't get stung in the face by a bee.
Transition 2
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

Everything went smoothly. I almost passed my rack spot, but remembered where it was last minute because of the light pole next to the rack.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Next year I'll have clipless pedals.
Run
  • 30m 1s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 39s  min/mile
Comments:

This is where the race falls apart for me. I'm not a good runner. I love to swim, and I love to bike, but running just isn't my thing.
What would you do differently?:

Pick up the pace a bit more, and spend more time training with the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Grab a Gatorade and water, and look for Brad to finish. Walk around, chat with friends who came to support me, and stretch a bit.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

MUST RUN FASTER!!! I should probably get a road bike too, huh? Hybrids just don't cut it. That Felt F90 is looking REALLY nice right about now.

Event comments:

It was a great race for me, and considering that I think the swim distance was longer than my Danskin race, I'm thrilled with my time. I'm looking forward to doing the International race next year...unless I get really fast with the sprint and have a chance of placing. Let's see what happens when I get a road bike and learn how to run!
