Pre-race routine:

Wow...what a whirlwind of a weekend.

I was originally going up to camp, cheer on friends, and scope it out for next year. Come to find out that one of my friends, Jeremiah, had gotten registered 2x somehow so we talked to the RD and he let us switch one of his bibs over to me. So I was in for a half that I didn't realize I would be doing...excellent!

The goal from the get-go was going to be "take it easy" as I have a half next Sunday that I want to crush. Have fun, enjoy the day, and do it differently than the way I normally do it.

I didn't have my aero helmet, disc wheel, and nutrition with me since I hadn't anticipated racing. I was up there to do some training so I had all the bare essentials for all 3 sports.
Event warmup:

Up at 4:30 and started getting last minute stuff ready. We walked from the campground to the race which was about .7 miles. Got to transition and realized that I left my cycling shoes in the truck at the campground. CRAP! I started running back to the campground as I only had 30 minutes before transition closed.

As I was running this older lady was parking her car and I asked her very nicely "what would it take to hitch a ride back to my campsite so I can do this race I'm signed up for?" She jumped all over it! It was awesome....my first experience hitch hiking!

She drove me back to the campground and I convinced her to wait for me as she wasn't allowed past the gate. I ran back to the site got my shoes from the truck and started running back. Looked down at my shoes and realized that I only had the rights to each pair! CRAP! Ran back to the truck to realize that when I emptied the truck last week I must have taken the lefts out. Are you kidding me? Process the problem a little bit and decide to go forward...the shoe will still clip in. Back out to the car and that very sweet lady gave me a ride to transition area. She was an angel!

Got everything ready, downed 400mg of caffeine and walked with Allie, Alex, Ben, and Sarah to the swim start.

Comments:

Good lord this was a struggle. About every 25 yards I was having to empty my right lens as sea water was leaking in. Lake water I can handle...not sea water with the salt stinging the eye!

It was getting old fast in the first few hundred yards so I decided to take my goggles off and try to figure out what was wrong. The gasket around it had come loose so water was just running right in.

Took a few seconds to try and fix it and couldn't do that and float at the same time. So I waved down a kayaker but she had zero interest in coming to me. So I swam to her. Took me about 5 minutes to fix the gogles after having to completely take them apart and put them together. Off I went.

That pretty much set the tone for the rest of the swim. I wasn't looking to push it hard at all but certainly wasn't looking for a 46 minute swim either!

Now, every race I've been a part of seems like the general consensus is that the swims are always long. This one WAS long. Everyone I talked to said their watches were reading around the 1.4 range. The FASTEST swim of the day was 29 minutes. No way was it a 1.2 mile swim and the quickest person was out in 29 minutes.

Either way my first ocean tri swim was quite the experience!
What would you do differently?:

Make sure goggles are set properly.

Comments:

Longest transition EVER! It's about .5 miles from the beach to bike exit....crazy. Feet were hurting like crazy running through town on pavement. I walked a few spots just keep it in my head that I'm NOT RACING!

Took my time getting the sand off my feet and putting socks on.

Comments:

Eased back on this and just enjoyed the ride. Ran into Ben and Alex on the bike in the first couple miles and spent probably the first 15 miles bouncing back and forth with them. Made for a pleasant ride to be with/near them.

I tried to coast as much as I could and just enjoy it. Several times I thought about going back and picking up a couple water bottles off the ground....especially when they were the fancy camelbak ones! :)

I used the powerbar energy blasts for my nutrition and it seemed to work well for what I was doing. Not sure it would have been enough if I was racing. 2 bottles of water and drank a half bottle of gatorade. I didn't want to mix too much gatorade in with the powerbar because I wasn't sure how it would sit. Was more of a little insurance and something with flavor.

HR stayed low most of the ride except on climbs. Easy course to relax on but a course that you could absolutely crush if you wanted to. Wanted to stay around 18 mph as I thought that might be 'cruising speed' for this but turns out that 18 would have driven me crazy and very hard to do.

Comments:

I saw Eric at T2 so I had him snap a couple pictures of me with my two right shoes. A USAT official came over because I was standing in the PRO area and he just laughed at me and walked away. I'm guessing he was going to tell me to get out of there and hand me a penalty but when he saw what I was doing it changed his mindset.

Comments:

Glad I had running shoes but they were the wrong shoes for this path. I wouldn't have worn my Zoot 5.0 had I known I was going to race but the only other pair I had were my Newtons and I haven't run in those for a couple years. Wasn't about to bust out 13 miles in Newtons.

Wanted to keep around a 9:00 pace for the whole thing and just enjoy it. I made sure to cheer everyone on that I saw....which is EVERYONE since it's an out and back. I had an absolute blast doing it to....to the point where my voice is horse from it.

The first several aid stations I was drinking Gatorade and just a touch of water. Seemed to work great as I was feeling good the whole run.

Was really uneventful for me except for cheering everyone on. 1 mile from the finish I saw Tim (Jeremiah's dad) leaning up against a power pole and he was just starting his run. Crossed the street to see what was up and he was cramping like crazy. I got him to lay down and I helped him stretch out as much as I could told him he needed some salt and whatever nutrition he had on him he needed to start pumping it hard and fast. He was feeling better so I got him up and he started to walk.

I went on to finish the run and just felt amazing.
Post race
Warm down:

Didn't do any warm down. My body felt good holding back and not taxing it....

I learned a lot from this race and it gave me a new perspective on triathlons. Being a FOP for smaller races I see what the MOP and BOP are going through and fighting for.

Looking back on the race it felt like it was full circle. I was able to get into the race because of Jeremiah Madden and I ended up helping his father, Tim, 1 mile into his run before completing his first half distance tri. Karma.

Event comments:

This is my second Rev3 event and they do a good job with it. The race got started a touch late but that wasn't a big deal. Little confusion about porta potties at the swim start but no biggie there either.

Just a couple minor things that they handled well I thought. Will absolutely do another Rev3 event.
