Age Group Rank = 5/18
Pre-race routine:

Paid entry fee of $74.55 on 01FEB14. Got up, ate cinamon rolls, had a cup of coffe, two bannanas, and a small cup of fruit.

Relaxed since I did not have to be at the race site until 0920 (Marking closed at 0930).
Event warmup:

Very short run <.25. Watched the people coming out of the pool down the chute. Saw Alex going into the pool and that was the last time I saw him. Also saw Roxanne inside getting marked, picking up her chip and met her dad.
Swim
  • 07m 37s
  • 300 yards
  • 02m 32s / 100 yards
Comments:

Water was not crowded and spacing was good. Indoor pool, warm water, and the pool area was also heated. Very comfortable. I wanted to push harder on the swim but the shoulder didn't want to particpate.
What would you do differently?:

Could have shaved a minute or more off of my time had I used more freestyle. Need to really push freestyle during training.
Transition 1
  • 01m 55s
Comments:

Most of the ZMs were at the rack when I arrived. I had banded my shoes to Grumpy so I just dropped my cap/goggles and hauled with the bike. The run from the pool to the transition area was what cost time, but I had a good pace during that as well. T1 is a PR for me. SOCKLESS with Sidi T2s.

1st in AG; 51 overall!! Bike start from rack felt very good!!
What would you do differently?:

Run faster from the pool!!
Bike
  • 26m 44s
  • 9 miles
  • 20.20 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike was good. My start felt great and I must have passed at least 35 riders along the route. My dismount went just as well, I was out of my shoes the last 400m and did a running jump off of the bike and ran into T2.

I did back off a bit on the final mile in order to recoup for the run. Overall, very pleased!
What would you do differently?:

Actually nothing. I thought the bike went very well. Potentially, I could have pushed even harder, but given the event, I think it worked out well.
Transition 2
  • 01m 28s
Comments:

This was the first full transition (1/2) that I went sockless. Off the bike was no issue as I'd practiced this. As soon as I racked the bike, I sat on my bucket, put on my hat, then shoes, and grabed my belt as I trotted off towrds the Run Start.

1st race with my new Zoot Ultra Race 4.0s. Ran without socks and they worked out very nicely. I did get a rub spot on the left upper heel, but I expected that since i haven't run sockless before. Great shoes!!!
What would you do differently?:

I'm trying to figure out how to cut down to >1m in T2. The run segment seems to be the place. I was on the backside of the racks so that came into play somewhat. Next time, run harder.
Run
  • 28m 49s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 18s  min/mile
Comments:

Run faster. I'd paced out with the intent of increasing around 1.5m. However, I decided to relax a little more than I should have and didn't pick up my pace until the last mile, which likely cost me making the podium.
What would you do differently?:

Not wait so long to pick up my pace. The plan worked but I needed to pace out a little faster.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked .25mi back to the transition area. Gathered my stuff and spoke to a few other athletes.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Me. I could have pushed harder and next time I will. Good season opener.

Event comments:

I rate this race a 4 only because the swim did not begin until nearly 1h after I was suppose to be in the water. Perhaps there were too many swimmers. Overall, the race was very good and I will definitely return next year, but I will not spend the night. I'll drive down that morning.
