Sunny
Total Time = 12h 05m 50s
Overall Rank = 514/1345
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 5/39
Pre-race routine:

Food - banana, yoghurt, boiled egg, vitamins
Shower, sunscreen, lube
Event warmup:

Minimal warm up, some mobilisation stretches
Swim
  • 1h 02m 47s
  • 3800 meters
  • 01m 39s / 100 meters
Comments:

Was apprehensive about the mass start but didn't want to under-seed myself lake last time so hung around the middle. It was a scrum and I got an elbow in the mouth and lots of smacks on the head but this fired me up and got me swearing. I normally avoid swimming in the middle of the pack but I coped OK and benefited from the drafting.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 1
  • 08m 8s
Comments:

The run up from the lake is 400m, a bit hard to get past people sometimes. T1 was in tent with volunteers helping. I was ready with instructions so it went pretty smoothly. Had toilet stop on way to pick up bike.
What would you do differently?:

Reapply sunscreen to face.
Bike
  • 6h 24m 41s
  • 180 kms
  • 28.08 km/hr
Comments:

I thought i would be faster but looking at the splits I may have gone out too fast. Nutrition and hydration were spot on. Nutrution - one gel, 2 SIS bars and one moonbar and iso/water every 15/20 mins.
What would you do differently?:

Go out more slowly.
Transition 2
  • 03m 56s
Comments:

Again T2 in tent with volunteers. Ready with instructions and all went well. They reapplied sunscreen on arms and legs.
Toilet stop and half banana on the way out.
What would you do differently?:

Reapply sunscreen properly to face.
Run
  • 4h 26m 18s
  • 42.2 kms
  • 06m 19s  min/km
Comments:

Seems I ran the first lap the fastest which i didn't mean to do. Managed to keep running, no walking. Had to stop twice for the toilet as stomach a bit upset. Didn't eat much solid food as it seemed to give me a stitch. Stuck to gels with ice cubes, water, iso, coke.
What would you do differently?:

Try and work out why my stomach gets upset on the run, this happened last time too. Try and start more slowly.
Post race
Warm down:

Went down to the lakeside and did stretches gently. Foam roller before bedtime.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Probably too eager and going out too fast on the bike and run legs. Strength on the bike again - need to look into this.

Event comments:

This is an excellent race and the weather on the day was perfect (this doesn't usually happen here). The volunteers were really good, the local supporters very enthusiastic and the organisation top notch. Would love to go back next year.

Course: 2 laps out and back to Reporoa on Broadlands road. The second lap is a bit longer with a tricky intersection (some people went wrong even Kessler). Some of the road is a bit rough but no potholes. Seemed like tailwind on the way out but the wind was not strong. Seemed like the wind changed direction too. Heartbreak hill is the worst part.
