Pre-race routine:

Woke 5am at our hotel - coffee - pb and banana toast. packed my backpack/wetsuit bag. didn't feel the need to get there at 5:30 since i wasn't starting until 8:40am! rode my bike about 4 miles to the start - strange feeling with a huge backpack and swinging wet-suit bag. probably not the safest...but i felt really cool. ha ha.
Event warmup:

well had some bike drama - my rear tire was soft and it was a problem. the bike guys were -thank goodness- at transition and they couldn't access the valve - or rather it was closed inside the whee. so id been blowing up nothing for the last 3 weeks. nice. they had to deflate it with a spoke to open again...i was so frazzled. Then saw TraceyV and Tammi - RElief! chatted with the gals...laughed...swam around in the water...felt great...my family made it to the beach and lots of kisses/pictures.

Comments:

Age-groupers were so nice; 'no, you go ahead,' 'no, you i insist.' ha. No one wanted to get smacked. got into a rhythm and maintained more than i thought. tried to catch the waves - but several times i swallowed water because they were just rolling on me. i only breathed to one side because i found sea sickness the other side. caught some men from previous waves - tried to relax. 1/2 way through the sun appeared and it was magical! really enjoyed - now i need to go faster.
What would you do differently?:

learn to go faster.......
Transition 1

Comments:

wet suit strippers rocked my world...wanted to kiss them. loaded up gels - i had a bad feeling i didn't have enough storage space on the bike. sun screen randomly. family cheering...
What would you do differently?:

have bento box loaded...

Comments:

This just seemed LONG! and it was because....i was hungry. Took gels about every 45 min - did'n't think i needed the salt caps - but it would've been nice - it got warm. my back hurt earlier than usual, chain fell off once, gatorade endurance on the course didn't take kindly to my stomach. long...tried to not push too hard. maintained a steady pace and loved seeing hills so i could think about something else.
What would you do differently?:

take more calories...
get in more longer rides...
sunscreen my lower back...ouch
Transition 2
  • 01m 42s
Comments:

happy with this time considering i still tie my shoes the old fashioned way. so freakin happy to see my cliff bar in transision!! inhaled 1/2 of it, hat, more sunscreen, and off.
What would you do differently?:

nothing

Comments:

so i somehow develped a blister - but i didn't know it at the time - felt like a rock in my shoe. it hurt...badly...of course i didn't stop. but it was useful to divert my attention away from other pain - ie. the side stich i developed at mile 4. saw my screaming family and friends (TracyV) in downtown egg harbor...2 miles of side-ache. decreased from my 9min pace..then huge hill appeared. more slowness...back up to speed around mile 6...mile 9...bluff. holy cow it was a beast..walked up. miles 10-13 felt awesome! sub 9 pace...sucks because overall i came out 9:43 pace. i was passing tons of people the last few miles! joe and the girls caught up with me and yelled encouragement. my knees were not so happy - which was strange. then the last 1/4 mile is a HUGE downhill - boy the knees really were angry. They destroyed my name at the finish line - ha!
What would you do differently?:

do more hills
better bike calories so no side aches...maybe the cliff bar did it?
Post race
Warm down:

whewwwww i was tired!! but excited to see the whole family - joe's side! joe shoved a huge bottle of chocolate milk in my face and ordered me to drink. had a finish picture with my girls.....they got me flowers!!!! this awesome volunteer hugged me because he knew it was an emotional time..very cute. We went to wade in the cold lake water....the twins were stripped down to their underwear...nice and classy. it was difficult to stomach the bbq pork sandwich and corn. Free beer...gave to my brother in law.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Comprehending the distance! pacing....calorie intake.....

Event comments:

Again....i just love Door County...it was one of my mom's favorite places and i thought of her during the race. It was awesome seeing joe and the family supporting me. very proud of this accomplishment..i learned lots and had a great experience.
