Pre-race routine:

This might be longest race report I have ever writen because Wildflower was more than just a race, it was a whole weekend experience.
The story starts months ago when my training buddies decided to do this race. At the time I was injured (knee) and knew that this weekend would be near impossible for me to get away. I put this out of my mind. Then a few weks ago, after a hard training session, my coach tried to convince me to come race the OLY. It worked. Pretty soon I was able to work out the childcare issues and had registered for the Oly. What happened next was unexpected. Our coach and good friend, Claudio, was arrested and is awaiting deportation back to Argentina. It was a shock. But he was adamant that we go to Wildflower without him. So we did it to honor him.
We totally travelled to Wildflower in style thanks to Claudio's Avia connections and our training buddy Brandon's awesome RV. We left Goodyear on Thursday night at 9pm. There were 6 of us in the RV. We made it well into CA before pulling over in the wee hours of the morning at a truck stop to get some sleep, we finished up the journey up the Grapevine on Friday morning and got to Wildflower at 11am. We were able to talk to Claudio on the phone a few times and he was still coaching us!
Our RV spot was right on Lake San antonio, right next to Transition and the expo.

We spent Friday at the expo. It was raining on and off all day which was a nice change for us Arizonians!Got hooked up with some great stuff from Avia and soaked in the atmosphere. Unfortunately my friend Amy hurt her eye which ended in a trip to Urgent care that lasted for hours.
Saturday was spent following my HIM friends around on the course. I ran way more than I should but I had a blast!
Sadly Amy's eye was scratched and she ended up not being able to race :-(
Event warmup:

Sunday was my race day and I woke up excited but relaxed. It was so nice to roll out of bed and straight into transition. We were already parked right there. Had a problem with my brake that I got fixed and got everything set up. My wave didnt start until 10:35 so I had plenty of time to prepare.

Swim: I headed down to the water and waited. We were able to swim for a couple of minutes before our start. The lake felt great. My friends were down there cheering for me and we were off. It was a run in start which was a first for me and I did pretty good. I got out to the first bouy without any problems and then caught the draft of a group. I stayed there until we caught some of the wave in front and had to start doing more passing. My swim went well, I was comfortable and sighted really well. At the turn around I pushed a bit harder and sighted to the turn then the balloons at the swim out. It was near the finish that I had the most trouble getting bumped around, but I got out the ramp and started to run up the hill to Transition. I glanced at my watch 28:xx. Good!

Comments:

Most people were slowly walking up the hill from the lake but I decided to run. Everyone cheered. The hill up seemed long. I got to my bike and had a good transition. I decided to put my bike shoes on in transition because the hill out was so steep. I got a great start and was off up the first of many hills.

Comments:

I had a great bike split. Fastest in my age group and 3rd fastest woman. Noone passed me on the bike. I wasnt afraid to go all out and I stood up in the hills. I was riding Claudio's bike (Velo Vie) and although the fit wasnt perfect, it was a great bike for this course,. I was flying on the downhill, getting well over 40mph. Time was 1:15:xx. I was so happy! T-2 was fast too.

What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I hammered it hard as i could and made the most of the flats and downhills.

I felt great on this run from the start. We headed out a beautiful trail along the lake side. My hips and butt hurt a bit on the first hill but otherwise I felt strong. I ran up all the hills as fast as I could (which felt like a shuffle at times) and kept a decent pace. People were complaining about the heat but it felt great to me! When I got to mile 4 I realized I needed to step it up. I was almost day dreaming at times. I had so many people to think about that morning. My family back home that were pulling for me, Amy who had to sit it out, my friends who had raced the tough course the day before, my coach who had trained me for a year and couldnt be here at his favorite race. They were all with me on that run. When I made it too the top of the big down hill, I just let it all go and sprinted down that hill. So awesome! I saw Brandon up ahead and passed him with a big slap on the back. I also sprinted down the finish shoot which was a great feeling. I stopped my watch and was ecstatic to see my run was just over 43 minutes.

Post race
Warm down:

I waited for Brandon atthe finish and soon found the rest of our gang. We headed back to the RV to clean up and rest for a bit before starting to pack up for the long journey home. I checked the results but they were running so far behind that I couldnt get my splits. We had been staying in touch with our friends back home so I knew someone would text the results.

We left around 3:30pm and rolled out. We were truly blessed with a great location :-) Thanks Avia and Claudio!!!

We stopped for pizza in Paso Robles and then were on the long way home. The trip was fun and it was great to be with such awesome people. There was never a dull moment. We mde it to Goodyear at 2:30am and unloaded the RV then drove home. I got into bed at 3:30am! Had to get up a few hours later with the kids. It was great to see the family again. I really missed them over the weekend.

Event comments:

This was so much more than just a race. The experience was amazing. I got to meet lots of Pros and all around great people. We had so much fun. I cant wait to come back and do the long course! The race directors, sponsors and crowds were the best ever!
The final results for all competitors are not posted but I got a nice email from Tri California explaining the delay. The girl who is listed as 1st o/a and 1st in my AG times dont add up. So, they said I got 3rd and will update the results page soon :)
