Pre-race routine:

Drove down from Orange County the night before w/ my Wife, Son, and 2 of my daughters. Spent the night at a hotel that was only .6 miles away from the race start...great location. Didn't sleep much the night before. Got up at 5:00 and headed over for check-in. It rained the night before and the whole race set-up, check-in, & the transition area was slushy mud. I always get to these races too early. Need to start sleeping more and getting there later. Ate a banana and a power bar. Felt good.
Event warmup:

Got in the water beforehand and swam around a bit. Water felt good. Not as cold as I expected. I think the fact that the air temp (50) was colder than the water temp (61) helped a bit.

Comments:

Swim was average at best. Couldn't see. I can't wear contacts, so I either need to get eye surgery or prescription goggles as it is very disorienting when you can't see where you are going. This is only my 3rd Tri and I thought my disorientation during the 1st 2 was because I was a "new tri-guy", but seeing would be helpful. Water Temp felt fine.

Transition was tough. It was a mud bowl and there was no place to rinse feet off. Took longer than expected to wipe feet off and put socks & shoes on. Then had to run thru mud w/ bike to get out of transition.

Enjoyable & Peaceful ride. I enjoy any bike ride that looks over water the entire time.
What would you do differently?:

I need to train a little harder for the bike. I feel like I can pick up a lot of time here.

I loved the run. 2 of the 3 miles were on grass. I've never run on grass before and it felt like I was floating.

It took about 1/2 a mile for me to find my stride after the bike, but once I did I felt great during the run. I am not a runner, but have been doing a lot of running lately and it helped immensely.
Post race
Warm down:

Hung out w/ Family. Ate Fruit w/ my son and then headed back to the hotel w/ My wife, son and 2 of my daughters. Hotel was less than a mile away. Great location. Showered and had a nice big brunch!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of sleep the night before. Need to train harder.

Event comments:

Odd race. I loved the course itself, but it wasn't as professionally run as the first two Triathlons I did. The Transition area was a muddy bowl. Nobody can help the weather, but being prepared w/ mats for transition would have been great. The transition from Bike to Run was chaotic. When I was running out, there were bikes coming in and other runners coming into finish. It was a free for all w/ no defined area of where anybody should be. I had to dodge both bikers and runners. I am surprised there weren't any major crashes. Overall I enjoyed the race, loved the course itself, and had a great time; but if I can run 1 triathlon a month, next year I think I will try another venue.
