Pre-race routine:

Got to bed around 10:30pm the night before. When the alarm clock went off at 5:30am, I HIT SNOOZE! My husband was like, "uhh, are you sure you want to do that? Don't you have that race?" Haha...Oh, yeah. But once I woke up and got some free breakfats at our hotel (cereal, muffin, coffee & a bottle of water) I was feeling more ready to race. Drove to the race site, but had a lot of trouble finding a parking spot.
Event warmup:

I ended up parking about 2 miles away from the race site (why didn't I see that coming? there is absolutely NO parking near beaches in So Cal). Threw my bag over my shoulder and biked to transition. Literally got there less than 10 mins before transition closed, so I was not able set up my area the way I wanted to. Grabbed my wetsuit, goggles, & cap and high tailed it to the beach. Got to jump in the ocean briefly before my wave started. It was nice to get adjusted to the water temperature.
Swim
  • 25m 26s
  • 1094 yards
  • 02m 20s / 100 yards
Comments:

During my last tri, I went out too fast and found myself out of breath about 200 meters out. It sucked, so I told myself I would take it easy on the swim and force myself to go slow. I had to fight the waves a little going out, but the water got very calm after reaching the 1st bouy. I got into a good rhythm and sighted well. Before I knew it, I was rounding the last bouy and coming in.
What would you do differently?:

Be much more agressive. I'm glad I started off slow, but I really should have picked up the pace after I got past the first bouy. I think I was so nervous about burning out that I just did an overly relaxed swim the whole time. I have to work on finding a good racing pace for my swim. I left the water knowing I could have pushed harder.
Transition 1
  • 03m
Comments:

The time is an estimate because this race did not post T1 or T2 times. The times were merged into the bike time. This is my best guess because I was pretty slow due to the fact that I got to tranistion late and didn't have time to set up well. I ended up riding with one glove cause I couldn't find the other. LOL. Talk about disorganized.
What would you do differently?:

Get to the race earlier and have the area better organized.
Bike
  • 1h 00m
  • 15.53 miles
  • 15.53 mile/hr
Comments:

Coming out of tranistion, I dropped my chain but was able to get it back on fairly quickly. I was really happy with the bike. I'm used to riding much bigger hills, so the course seemed easier to me. I was able to push myself more, but it was hard to judge if I pushed myself enough or could have pushed harder.
What would you do differently?:

I think I could have pushed a little harder. Just like the swim, I have to work on finding a race pace. It's hard to know exactly how hard I can push myself without burning out. I just need more TITS.

Also, I need to make sure my bike is not in too hard a gear when I rack it. This is what I blame for dropping my chain.
Transition 2
  • 03m
Comments:

When I got to transition, some people had already finished the race and were hanging out/trying to leave with their bikes. This created some unnecessary congestion IMO. Not sure why transition was not closed to those athletes (this was the policy in my last race).
What would you do differently?:

Again, get to the race earlier to set up my area better. I fumbled around a lot because stuff was not well organized.
Run
  • 32m 21s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 10m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

I was able to run the whole course with no walking breaks, so I was really proud of that.I didn't feel as if I had to walk, but at the same time I felt that if I picked up the pace I would have to walk. I felt like I could keep running forever at that pace, so I stuck with it and didn't try and push it for fear I would burn out.
What would you do differently?:

Again, I probably could have pushed a little harder, especially towards the end. I should have made myself pick up the pace a little the last half mile.
Post race
Warm down:

When I crossed the finsh line, they had to tell me to stop running! I think I was still really fired up. I had to walk around for a bit to calm down. Ate a half of a banana & half a bagel.Drank a bottle of water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Physically I was prepared for this race. Mentally, I have to learn how to push myself more. I think I'm capable of more, I just need to learn how hard I can push without breaking down.

Event comments:

I was very spoiled during my 1st race. On a scale of 1-10, it was a 10. This race was maybe a 7 or 8. The lack of parking is not their fault, but I wish it had been mentioned on the website or in the emails. I was not thrilled with them rolling the transition times into the bike or having to wait 2 days for the split times to be posted (Iron Girl gave me preliminary print out 5 minutes after I crossed the finish line). Also, there could have been more water along the run course. But, overall it was a good race and I would do it again.
