Pre-race routine:

Woke up before the buzzer again. Got dressed and headed out the door. Had to walk about a half mile down the boardwalk to the transition area. Thank God they assigned everybody a specific rack slot so there was no scrambling for position. Got set up then had to wait around for the start of the race, just stretching and getting into the mentality of the sport.
Event warmup:

Did some stretching in the transition area before it closed. Tried to work out the soreness that I've been feeling in my left shoulder. Walked to the race start. I was the first wave so there was no guinea pigs to learn from.
Swim
  • 14m
  • 547 yards
  • 02m 34s / 100 yards
Comments:

Definitely felt unprepared for the swim. I started out feeling great but everytime I started to get a good rythm in I was running into someone (I think he just kept criss crossing in front of me) so by the time I was able to get away from the crowd I was out of breath and unable to gain anything from my side breathing. Spent most of the remainder of the swim on my back.
What would you do differently?:

I definitely need to spend more time swimming than anything else.
Transition 1
  • 02m 17s
Comments:

Suit only got stuck on the damn timing chip. The body glide worked wonders the rest of the way. I felt great from beginning to end and at no time even thought of quitting.
What would you do differently?:

Start with my timing chip first.
Bike
  • 37m 17s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 20.00 mile/hr
Comments:

After all the problems I've been having with this bike, I wanted to get through the course as fast as I could to minimize the distance between myself and the bike finish as possible so if I needed to carry my bike back I could still finish the race. I ended up pushing myself so much harder than I ever dreamed possible. I felt really good about my bike performance.
What would you do differently?:

Only strive to push myself harder.
Transition 2
  • 01m 57s
Comments:

The route that I was forced into was filled with people that didn't care about moving forward. Mostly they were walking in front of me this way or that without anyone placing controls on them at all so I killed alot of time trying to get to my rack.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure how I can fix the routing problem for this particular race. Just need to make up for it in other areas.
Run
  • 26m 54s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 39s  min/mile
Comments:

I didn't push myself nearly hard enough. I allowed myself to get psyched out by how far I thought it was rather than just running as hard as I could.
What would you do differently?:

Simply focus on the back of the person in front of me and push myself pass them and just keep going one opponent at a time.
Post race
Warm down:

Stagger walk out of the finishing chute looking for familiar faces.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training on the swim, and lack of focus on the run were the two key areas that limited my ability. Fix those and the sky's the limit.

Event comments:

The event was awesome. I will definitely be back next year and I'll even try to sucker my brothers into it as well.
