Pre-race routine:

To quote my training blog from Saturday, "Race tomorrow, I'm totally not ready, it's an offroad tri, and it's been raining for about 2 weeks. Oh, and the lake is currently 48 degrees. Oh shit!"

Ok, so here's how the day unfolded for me: I drove out the morning of the race, about 1 1/2 hours. Ate a crappy 7-11 tuna sandwich and drank a cup of coffee.

Got there early, set up transition, and meandered around chatting with Tim trying to figure out what the hell I was thinking.
Event warmup:

No. Well, I did jump in the lake about 5 minutes early, pee in my wetsuit, and swim for about 30 seconds. Too cold to warm up... The water was 48 freakin degrees. Thats COLD!
Swim
  • 12m 26s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 25s / 100 yards
Comments:

Felt good, I started right in the middle of the mass start, and had quite a lot of contact. Sadly, I was just starting to find my groove with about 100 yeards to go... By the time we got out of the water, every exposed piece of skin was hurting from the cold water. I did wear a neoprene hoodie which I think really helped, as it covered my head and ears.

Judging by the time, I'd say it's clear that they shortened the course a bit due to the cold water. No way I swim that fast, I was 1:50ish at best.
What would you do differently?:

Move this race to summer.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Both transitions are in the biking time, don't know exactly how long either one was.

LONG run up from the lake to transition. I left an old pair of shoes at the water exit, which worked well. One extra thing to do, but I ran much quicker and with no pain compared to last year. Once at transition, I really took my time. Shoes off, wetsuit off, helmet on, socks and bike shoes on, Garmin 305 on (this takes me way too long), then I made a very brief and futile attempt at putting on gloves. I quickly realized that wasn't going to happen, so I dropped them, grabbed the bike and took off.
What would you do differently?:

Don't even think about gloves.
Bike
  • 1h 50m
  • 16 miles
  • 8.73 mile/hr
Comments:

It was certainly fun, but I'm in no shape at the moment for this. I was significantly slower than last year, and while some of that is no doubt the muddy conditions, It's also definately fitness.

My bike is mad at me. By the end of the second loop it was yelling very loudly every time I used the brakes, and pretty well refused to shift when and where I told it to. I think that's pretty par for the course today, after all it is Xterra right?
What would you do differently?:

train?
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Transition time is in the bike segment.

Shoes and socks off, socks and shoes on, helmet off, grab race belt and go! Yes, I changed my socks. Not sure it was worth it, the new pair was soaked about 2 minutes later...
What would you do differently?:

Maybe not change socks? I dunno though, those bike socks were REALLY full of mud.
Run
  • 40m 33s
  • 3.95 miles
  • 10m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

Good run for me, again I'm not really physically prepared to do this race right now. I didn't push too hard, just ran slightly harder than my normal pace. I ran all the hills though!! And there were some steep ones. This is the only place I passed people on the run today, when they walked the hills. I may be slow, but I never walked! I got passed right before the line, I had no kick in me today.

mile 1: 9:59
mile 2: 10:40
mile 3: 11:11
mile 4: 9:18
What would you do differently?:

see bike.
Post race
Warm down:

ate some pasta and fruit, and hung out for a bit while watching Tim go to the podium to get his trophy. Dude's fast! loaded up the car and drove home!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

me. And the mud. mostly me.

Event comments:

Another excellent TBFracing.com event! I'll be back for more.
