Pre-race routine:

As the plan was to train through this race, I rode TCSD coastal club ride before heading to the expo to check my bike. Rested for the remainder of the day - resisting temptation to lay out by the pool in the sun. Geared up and loaded up my road bike for Monica and picked her up in the morning. Got to Spanish Landing around 5:15 and found parking on the street. Walked to transition and set up, used facilities and got marked. Time got away from me and I headed to the swim start about 15 minutes before my wave start. I felt tired and not ready to race.
Event warmup:

Paddled out to swim start.
Swim
  • 15m 51s
  • 1000 meters
  • 01m 35s / 100 meters
Comments:

Not a good swimmer. Didn't warm up enough. Was apprehensive about the start. Goggles have been fogging up, so tried old ones as planned. Of course, they weren't tight enough and leaked as soon as I started. Tried to empty em out, but they kept leaking. Went too hard and fell apart early. Wanted it to be over before the first turn. About a minute slower than last time.
What would you do differently?:

Warm up longer.
Transition 1
  • 01m 31s
Comments:

Short run (less than 50 yds) from swim out to my rack. Didn't concentrate on getting wetsuit off during run. Was still working with leash while standing at my bike. Suit got stuck on both heels. Felt like it took forever. Long run out with bike. Surprised to see time was close to 2 minutes.
What would you do differently?:

More urgency in getting suit off while running. Was just glad to be out of water!
Bike
  • 47m 33s
  • 18.64 miles
  • 23.52 mile/hr
Comments:

Careful at the bike mount (no flying mount). Started off easy on the bridge, waited until the downhill to get into shoes. Got passed right away by someone in my AG and I couldn't keep up. Kept the pace manageable up Canon and then pushed at the top and up Catalina to the guard shack. Passed a lot of people, made turn at first loop and faster AGers on their second loop started passing me. Not many, but a few. Jockeyed back and forth with some in my AG. Course is screaming fast back down to transition. Lots of time to recover. Felt ready to run. Bike split was about 2 min faster than last time.
What would you do differently?:

I think this went pretty well. Rode 40 miles the day before, so that probably had an impact on my race. Just training through though. I can't complain.
Transition 2
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

Loved the flying dismount. First time that I haven't come to a complete stop. Just swung a leg over, slowed down and hopped off just before the dismount line and kept running. Long run w/bike. Stopped Garmin & reset. Didn't hit stopwatch split. Racked bike, helmet off. Socks, shoes, visor. Grabbed handheld bottle w/race belt and Garmin attached and ran out.
What would you do differently?:

Figure out how to hit both bike Garmin and stopwatch at same time.
Run
  • 41m 45s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 06m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

Hit stopwatch to start run split and started to work on getting race belt and Garmin off of handheld. Saw PB & Karen at the run out, cheering and taking pics. Once I got race belt and Garmin situated, it was time to run. Didn't feel great, but didn't feel terrible either. Cloud cover kept things cool, so just had to keep on keepin on. The miles clicked off. I caught a lot of people and was only passed once - by TCSD's Craig Z, from the wave behind (again). It got tough with a mile to go, but I finally finished. About a minute slower than last time.
What would you do differently?:

Push through the tougher spots in the middle of the 10k.
Post race
Warm down:

Hung out in the chute for a while, chatting with finishers and then went to wait along the course for Monica. She finished in 2:11.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Fitness. Struggling with overtaper / overracing / underrecovery / undertraining / overeating. Not a good combination. 40 miles on the bike the day before probably affected my ability to perform faster, but I'm not too worried about it. I was hoping to finish top 5 AG, but I finished 8th. It's a competitive race and while it sets up well for me as a (supposed) runner and non-swimmer, I'm not fast enough to compete with the best in my division at this caliber of event.

Event comments:

Competitive local event that attracts athletes from all over. Not crazy about the point-to-point run (we walked back to transition after the race - about 3 miles). Easy swim, fast bike and flat run.
