Overall Rank = 101/1037

Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 3:45 to drive to Malibu. I had a peanut butter sandwich. Got all set up in transition, talked to a few people and the gf. I then headed down to the beach start.
Event warmup:

Swam in the water for a little bit.
Swim
  • 32m 30s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 59s / 100 yards
Comments:

I've been working pretty hard on the swimming, so I was thoroughly disappointed at the swim time. Not sure what was going on, if there was some current going on, but I could not get into a good grove or speed.
What would you do differently?:

Try to be a little more aggressive on the swim.
Transition 1
  • 02m 55s
Comments:

This was better than last year, but still a bit slow. Every time I get out of the water into T1, my body takes awhile to get adjusted to running. I was pretty tired.
Bike
  • 1h 06m 37s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 22.38 mile/hr
Comments:

So the goal of the bike was to hang onto a 160 hr. The week prior to the race I did a century, so I was a little concern that my legs may have not recovered to race pace. My goal was to reach 22-23 mph, and my garmin clocked me going 22.5. I didn't get passed by anyone on the bike except for 1 guy who was probably going 25-26 mph.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, just gotta work on that bike power and hopefully finish a 40k in an hour or less.
Transition 2
  • 01m 36s
Comments:

This was a lot faster than last year and it is all because of the tempos.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 44m 38s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

I was looking forward to the run to see how well fitness has improved. My garmin clocked me going 7:20s the whole way, last year, I was going 7:35s. I caught up to a guy in my ag who was pacing the rest of the run. Never had that happen before because usually most the guys in my ag pass me on the run. This guy decided to pace me the whole way, and I couldn't drop him until the very last half of mile. When I crossed the finish line, I waited for him to thank him for helping me to run faster.
What would you do differently?:

Just keep working on the run fitness.
Post race
Warm down:

Saw the gf and walked around a bit.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My swim sucked, but the rest of the race was good. I was 2 minutes away from a podium finish, and it would have been my first one. I did however get into a top 10, with a field that wasn't so deep, but it's good for the mental game.

Event comments:

Great race. It's fun and tons of really cool peeps out there racing and non-racers.
