Pre-race routine:

Ate a half of a bagel and some coffee. Arrived at the race about 5:45 and really could not improve on that much. My wife was with me and my son surprised me by driving over race morning. Arrived early enough to get my choice on rack.
Event warmup:

Swam a little.
Swim
  • 06m 29s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 28s / 100 yards
Comments:

My swim fitness was a little down because I had planned to trade time with my bike training. I definitely noticed as I needed to slow a bit after first turn. I got passed soon after the first turn and stayed with him for a while but decided to let him go.

At the last turn there were many tired swimmers from earlier waves. It was hard to pick through the traffic. I dodged several breast strokers and many on their backs.
What would you do differently?:

I need to get my swim back where it was. I lost a little confidence not winning my swim wave.
Transition 1
  • 02m 31s
Comments:

Don't know my time as the timer malfunctioned. Ti and bike time are mixed. Just a guess. It was an abnormally long run to transition which I prefer for some reason.
Bike
  • 26m 30s
  • 10 miles
  • 22.64 mile/hr
Comments:

My time is a guess as the results have bike and T1 mixed.

I am beginning to wonder if I have any potential to get fast on the bike. I feel like I have worked pretty hard with little reward. I need to do something different in my training. I am still progressing but remain slow comparatively.

At least 3 in my AG passed me, two early and one late. The bike course was very congested and I rarely got out of the passing lane. I seem to lose focus on the bike keeping my speed up. I continually have to tell myself to push. It is unlike the swim or run where I have a feel for the pace I can hold. Maybe it will come.
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

Uneventful and felt pretty good.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing I know of.
Run
  • 21m 58s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

Pushed very hard and was pleased. The heat lately has left me with no idea of how fast I could run.

Drank very little but used the water for cooling. Seemed to be a good recipe for a sprint.

Settled a bit at first and tried to get a feel for what I could do. Picked it up as the race progressed and passed many of people. I passed one guy in my age division with less than a quarter to go. He gave a big moan that sounded like the one I gave when he passed me on the bike.

Garmin distance and splits.

1-7:08
2-7:08
3-6:58
.12-5:55
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Not much of a warm down as I was spent on the run. Just walked around and caught my breath.

Event comments:

Could not ask for much more. Given the size of the race and the venue I thought is was above average and a little better than last year.
