Pre-race routine:

Up at 5:30, drove over to the race with vegemite bagel, banana, cytomax and coffee. Arrived at 6:30 and parked in residential area near the finish and biked to transition. Transition in- and out- points weren't perfectly balanced so selected a transition spot between bike in and run out - this meant short T2 and average T1.
Event warmup:

Gel and Gatorade 15-20 mins prior to the start. Went for a little swim prior to the start. Good to get acclimated to the cold water and get goggles set properly.
Swim
  • 35m 33s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 10s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started poorly. Had a lot of trouble getting into a rhythm and calming down, likely because I felt like I should be keeping up with the rest of the wave. I am not a fast swimmer, but once I settled into my grove I was fine.
What would you do differently?:

Definitely need to practice/train more, figure out how to sight properly.
Transition 1
  • 04m 41s
Comments:

This was actually a decent transition for me - was efficient putting bike gear on and getting out of the transition with my bike. Most of the time was the run from the beach up to the transition (probably 2-2.5 mins) and ultimately my time was fairly decent compared to others. Problem with a beach finish is sand on the feet (and between the toes) that needs to be wiped off prior to putting on bike shoes. Having shoes at the exit of the swim might be an advantage getting back to transition.
What would you do differently?:

Probably wipe my feet off better before socks and bike shoes are put on. in the run, particularly I got the feeling that there was sand on my feet - not debilitating but uncomfortable and certainly distracting at times
Bike
  • 1h 17m 23s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.27 mile/hr
Comments:

Overall the ride was good for me - I pushed moderately hard (while keeping some in the tank for the run) and this was my best leg. Maybe not as smart strategically on the course. But overall was happy with this
What would you do differently?:

Maybe push a little harder on the uphills and coast more on the downhills. Make sure and have my endurolytes.
Transition 2
  • 00m 43s
Comments:

Was a fast T2 - of course favorable rack position helped here. Happy with this effort.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 57m 39s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

Overall my run felt slow. I started a little slow, with the usual sluggishness off the bike, and felt queasy initially. Based on my limited training and current pace at this distance, this was about where I expected to be in terms of pace - a little slower than normal, due to tiredness from swim and bike. However felt slow due to a lot of much faster people passing me. Although I was a bit sore, I enjoyed this wonderful course.
What would you do differently?:

Train more... as usual.
Post race
Warm down:

didn't have a proper warm-down... met kids and end and spent time with them and had some basic food and very light stretching. Should have stretched more, but

Event comments:

This is a great course. Really a fun race. Hats off to the organizers - I will definitely come again.
My only nit/comment is that it was a pity that the transition moved from the planned location... this wasn't communicated to participants well, and moving it further away from the finish meant that the finish line and the presentations etc were disjointed/disconnected. Also meant that the post-race food was not in the same place as the presentations.
At the finish it wasn't obvious where the presentations were going to be.

Course: Out and back along Highway 1 to Davenport. Undulating course with modest up and downhills. No really big or steep hills. Very scenic ride and weather was perfect with only a little breeze. Getting to highway 1 via city streets is flat and fast. On the return a little detour along Natural Bridges is a narrow, somewhat rough road. Having the bike-course start with a steep incline out of transition is not ideal, but making people walk the incline in both directions is smart to avoid pile-ups/crashes.

Course: Course exited Transition and went up short steep incline to meet Cliff Drive alongside the finish. Course was picturesque, along the walking path on top of the cliffs - undulating a little, so some slope variation without any hills. Really a fantastic course.
