Total Time = 2h 42m 28s
Overall Rank = 166/829
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 28/105
Pre-race routine:

3:45am wake-up; instant oatmeal with banana; 16oz coffee with soy milk
Event warmup:

Light swimming prior to race start 200-300yds free, breast & back
Swim
  • 37m 4s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 16s / 100 yards
Comments:

Crowded start all the way around the turn bouy (approx. 500-600 yards); solid pacing, stroke and breathing on back stretch
What would you do differently?:

Start on outside to avoid crowding at turn buoy and keep clear lane to get into rhytm sooner; sacrifice distance for pace and hopefully overall speed
Transition 1
  • 02m 52s
Comments:

Long run from water to bike; overall transition seemed smoother than total time listed
What would you do differently?:

No socks and faster shoe entry
Bike
  • 1h 10m 12s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 21.24 mile/hr
Comments:

Riding blind without HR monitor and Cadence computer
Thought my average speed was faster than actual
What would you do differently?:

Make sure Cadence & heart rate monitors are working
Transition 2
  • 01m 53s
Comments:

Didn't seem to take as long as listed
What would you do differently?:

Have shoes closer to completely laced and no socks
Run
  • 50m 29s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

Hard start up and over causeway; legs and body felt tired
What would you do differently?:

HR monitor critical to balancing output/ effort
Post race
Warm down:

Cold water over the head and lots of walking; hamstring stretches;

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Cadence and HR monitor malfunctions; hard to control pacing and effort without either

Event comments:

Poor start--too crowded and no waves to thin herd; great course, well organized, plenty of volunteers and hydration; rumor has it actual distances on bike and run were longer than posted... that would explain why the times seemed slower than what I thought/ felt I produced
