Total Time = 2h 11m 41s
Overall Rank = 338/436
Age Group = 40-45
Age Group Rank = 33/38
Pre-race routine:

Got up about 5:30 AM, Ate a hard boiled egg and some cereal. Had a cup of coffee. Packed up the gear.
Event warmup:

Swam across the river to the start. This is deceivingly easy as the swim across to the start is downstream. Entered this at the swim exit.
Swim
  • 36m 37s
  • 880 yards
  • 04m 10s / 100 yards
Comments:

The exit is up some wooden stairs against the river bank which are slightly tilted down and slippery. When the wooden stairs stop then it up more very muddy ground for another 20 feet before you are on level grass.
What would you do differently?:

I swam out to the start too early and spent too much of my energy practice swimming. By the time the race started I was cold, goggles were fogging.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Transition area is under the I-5.
What would you do differently?:

Have an extra towel there to dry my feet. After I put my socks on they were wet throughout the ride and were actually cold in my bike shoes.
Bike
  • 1h 04m 36s
  • 15 miles
  • 13.93 mile/hr
Comments:

Road on my Specialized mountain bike. Had slicks on.
What would you do differently?:

Need to get Aero bars.
Transition 2
  • 00m
What would you do differently?:

Take time to stretch and slow my breathing down after the run.
Run
  • 30m 28s
  • 3 miles
  • 10m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

This was my very first triathlon and I was surprised at how I had to slow down and walk a bit after the bike ride because my breathing pattern was so labored during the ride. Normally during practice runs I would just slip into my pace that worked with my breathing and could just go on and on and on. But during the ride my breathing was much more rapid and I had a hard time trying to get into "zone" that felt right.
What would you do differently?:

Take an extra minute or two to stretch or walk or do something to get my breathing down after the ride.
Post race
Warm down:

Easy, went and got some pasta and salad with family.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Definitely the swim. I was not prepared for the current.

Event comments:

Although I was not happy with my rank, I was just glad to finish. There were about a dozen DNF pulled out of the water. This was my very first triathlon and a lot of fun. I think I will keep doing them.
