Age Group Rank = 4/38
Pre-race routine:

Was running late most of the morning. Had nut butter on an ezekiel english muffin.
Event warmup:

10 min swim in the lake. It was deceivingly cold
Swim
  • 21m 26s
  • 1320 yards
  • 01m 37s / 100 yards
What would you do differently?:

Swim straight. But other than that, it was a good relaxed swim
Transition 1
  • 02m 32s
Comments:

Thought I was faster than this time. Long run on rocks to bike and my feet were numb.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Bike
  • 1h 10m 8s
  • 24 miles
  • 20.53 mile/hr
Comments:

I stayed at a comfortable pace that I knew I could keep up and kept my cadence high. WIth new bike and more time spent on cycling this felt like the best bike leg I have had.
What would you do differently?:

I could have pushed a bit more maybe but I didn't want to have a poor run.
Transition 2
  • 01m 37s
Comments:

Fine transition.
Run
  • 43m 25s
  • 6 miles
  • 07m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

The run is always my strongest leg of the race. Not this time. I started running and couldn't feel the front half of either foot. I literally felt like I was running on stubs. Always being cold I am used to cold feet on the run but I have never had TOTALLY numb feet. After a mile I actually stopped and took my shoes off to see if I had stuff stuffed up in the toes of the shoes since that is what it felt like. I knew this was impossible but I had to check. At mile 3 I started with pins and needles. By mile 4 I was almost normal. In the last two miles my left calf felt like it was going to get a tear. My right calf which always is tight in races had been tight the entire time. I did not want a tear to happen in my calf - which I am prone to so I slowed the pace but not totally. I tried a happy medium. After the race I couldn't move my calf so maybe I should have slowed more but... oh, well. I don't think it was a tear. So my run wasn't great but I was happy to have had a good bike which I never do.
What would you do differently?:

Get some circulation.
Actually I need to stretch my calves every day. I get lazy about it and I always pay the price, especially if it is cold. I am certain no one there would have called this a cold race but anything under 80 is cold for me so...
Post race
Warm down:

Not much. Some light stretching but I had to get on the road so we packed up the family and headed out.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My calves.

Event comments:

Like this race a lot.

Course: First leg of swim is right into the sun. Very hard to sight. After a few minutes I was wondering why I was all alone - I was swimming too parallel to the shore and went a bit off of course. After first left turn buoy it was all fine.
