Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4am. Got dressed and packed up the last few items. Made my normal morning protein shake and headed to meet another friend. We made it to the race site at about 5:05 (staying in Louisville)
Event warmup:

Took forever. Being the last wave wasn't fun. Swam a little bit before hand, maybe 5 minutes. Finally my wave started... first half IM here we go!
Swim
  • 35m 56s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 42s / 100 yards
Comments:

Thank god for wetsuit legal race. It's unbelievable how much faster I am with a wetsuit. My time was just a bit slower than an Olympic tri swim time I did a few weeks ago without a wetsuit. I just wanted to go under 2:00/100yd so when I got out of the water and saw sub 37 I was ecstatic.
Transition 1
  • 02m 49s
Comments:

Fine. Probably a little slow but I didn't rush.
Bike
  • 2h 46m 15s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.21 mile/hr
Comments:

I wanted to be over 20mph average which I was, but it didn't go well. My hamstrings started tightening up around mile 20 and never gave up. I felt like I took it fairly easy first lap and wanted to negative split but it didn't happen. Just couldn't push it with the hamstrings. I have never had any problems with my hamstrings before, so I don't know if it was the elevation or just bad luck.
What would you do differently?:

Get new hamstrings.
Transition 2
  • 01m 38s
Comments:

Fine. I was glad to be off that damn bike.
Run
  • 1h 58m
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

My goal going in was a 5:30 race time. After getting off the bike I knew I could run 9min miles and easily make my time. Good thing, cause that is what I averaged. I was hoping to run around 8:30s but couldn't keep up that pace after about 5 miles. I was also planning on only walking through every other aid station but I hit every one. That sun was brutal.
What would you do differently?:

Uh, run faster?
Post race
Warm down:

Felt like dying. The feeling didn't hit me until I finished, then my body felt like shutting down. Almost went to med tent but headed for some food and then back into the water. Felt a lot better after I cooled down. Ended up napping in the shade as I waited for my other two friends.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training? Altitude?

Event comments:

Had a good swim, hit my goal bike speed and overall time goal but I was frustrated with my hamstrings cramping and a subpar run. Was thinking about doing two half IM's next year and then moving up a full, but I think I'll stick with one half IM a year for awhile!
