Pre-race routine:

woke up at 4am to get ready. Had time to empty my bowel, didn't want to wait in line for porta potty.
Breakfast was a banana and PBJ. Brought a bagel but didn't eat it.
Event warmup:

Did nothing the day before.
Swim
  • 50m 29s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 23s / 100 yards
Comments:

ok, clearly this is weak event for me. but my goal was to complete this in under one hour which I did. I actually felt I did well, I didn't float on my back at all, I freestyled and breast stroked my way through the course. The water was really nice and I didn't panic as I had in previous open water swim. Of course I was passed by most of the waves that started after me, what else is new.
What would you do differently?:

train more in open water if I can
Transition 1
  • 04m 31s
Comments:

the run to the transition wasn't that long and I was hoping there would be people with water coming out of the water but there wasnt. I have to figure out how to transition quicker, getting out of the suit and putting on my socks/shoes took a lot of time.
Bike
  • 3h 49m 50s
  • 56 miles
  • 14.62 mile/hr
Comments:

I realized this is probably the most difficult leg of the race for me. The ride up Ortega Highway was challenging. I'm not sure how I made it up there. it was hot and long, kept wondering when I would reach the top.
During the beginning portion of the ride I witness the most horrific bike crash in my life. Riding up Via Prado some city workers called out, speed bump to the riders coming down the hill. People were really coming down the hill fast! So some of us riding up were yelling "speed bump". next think you know this rider came riding down and did a flip on her bike. It was a really, really bad accident. And when I got to the top I yelled to one of the race volunteers to get emergency crew down there quick. when I got down there, one of the racer was on her phone telling someone to "come quick hurry" and I glanced at the injured cyclist and all I can see was blood on her face. So for the rest of the race, all I thought was about her and prayed for her health. It was really traumatic. Coming down the hill, I thought would be easier but it was actually more difficult. I really lost it the last 14 miles or so. I could not get anything going and I struggled to the finish line.
What would you do differently?:

train more on the bike and eat more. I finish one bottle of homemade brew and some water and had some fig newton (I think four) but that wasn't enough. I think I was tapped out.
Transition 2
  • 02m 17s
Comments:

i think i transition pretty well considering I was beat from the ride. I was so happy to see sharon and the kids and I got to kiss J and D was I was going out on the run.
What would you do differently?:

grab more food.
Run
  • 2h 17m 34s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 30s  min/mile
Comments:

when I got out of the transition, i was doing fine but then when it got to the first section of the beach that's when I lost it. I wasn't able to run on the beach and I had to walk a bit. By the time I got to the loop section, I was really tired and I knew my pace was not up to par. But I manage to get through my three laps using walk/run method. I took a lot of water and had bananas and oranges. but it was kinda cool seeing others and seeing who had the braclets and how many. good way to measure myself. i was able to see the racer who set up next to me in transition area (darn didn't get his name) and we gave each other a high five and words of encouragement. I had two fruit packs, lots of cups of water and couple bananas and orange slices
What would you do differently?:

do some longer brick training and run more. probably speed work.
Post race
Warm down:

cross the finish line after running through that awful sand. bummer my family missed me.
I walked to the "refreshment" area and grabbed some water and two slices of pepperoni pizza and went to transition. should have seen if I could have gotten a massage or even a beer.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

was physically tired the last section of the bike and then the run

Event comments:

I would rate it higher if it had better post race activities and also the fac they had no speed bump sign. it wasn't even mentioned during the safety meeting.
