Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4am (protein shake at 3am) showered, dressed, cliff bar, bagel.
Event warmup:

Got to transtion at 5:15, light run warm up, cytomax, light swim warmup
Swim
  • 35m 59s
  • 750 meters
  • 04m 48s / 100 meters
Comments:

Horrible swim, treading water killed me. Also deviated from normal freestyle swim way too much. Looked up alot, and out of breath often. Cramped on second half of swim. Got rattled early and never recovered. Stopped to grab buoys about 5-6 times!
What would you do differently?:

Stay on ledge until start, more warmup, keep head in water and trust navigation. Practice open water swim before race. This race was my first open water swim, and it showed!!
Transition 1
  • 06m 13s
Comments:

Needed rest because of bad swim. Calves and hips were sore and cramped. Overall transition was ok, but took extra time because I needed the rest.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder (assuming swim doesn't kill me) and don't rest.
Bike
  • 43m 37s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 17.06 mile/hr
Comments:

Good bike, but got passed often. Second loop was much faster.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder throughout.
Transition 2
  • 03m 23s
Comments:

Better T2, as I had good energy level off bike, but calves were very sore.
What would you do differently?:

Push a little harder to get out quicker.
Run
  • 29m 49s
  • 3.2 miles
  • 09m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

Great run considering the bad swim and pain in legs and hips. Made up time and never walked.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder if body will hold up. I can always slow at end if needed, but can't make up for lost time due to slower pace early.
Post race
Warm down:

Light walk and plenty of water. Waited about 20-30 minutes to eat. Felt good after race. (calves felt better once warmed up 1.2 miles into run)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Horrible swim and calf/hip cramps.

Event comments:

Great race, though not much to compare to being this was my first. I finished under 2 hours. That was the goal, so mission accomplished.
