Pre-race routine:

Drove 25 min from my hotel to the race. Grabbed a coffee and clif bar for breakfast.
Event warmup:

Swam probably 50 yards prior to start.
Swim

  • 2112 yards

Comments:

Started in the last of 3 waves. Going to the first buoy sighted fine. Coming back in I was sighting in the sun. The ladies had pink caps and started 15 min ahead of me. I was having a hard time distinguishing between the ladies heads and the orange buoys. I was FOP at this race and couldn't draft off anyone. I thought I was slacking and expected to be over 30 min
What would you do differently?:

Bring tinted goggles
Transition 1
  • 02m 20s
Comments:

T1 was a long run from the beach and the mats were on the beach. That's the reason for the long T1. Wetsuit strippers were a nice and unexpected touch. Left my shoes on my bike and right when you get on the bike you start a climb. Tough with my feet on top of my shoes.
What would you do differently?:

Good question

Comments:

Couse- I knew there'd be hills but wasn't prepared for what I got. Power meter saved me from burning all my matches before the run.

There was only ONE freaking water station at mile 40! And when they handed the bottle there was no cap so you had to pound it to discard in the discard zone! I know it peeved everyone. I didn't bring a bottle because it was advertised there'd be water every 10-15 miles. I had to live off my Infinit bottle for practically the entire ride. It got to 80 degrees out before the ride ended and my hydration was way off due to this.
What would you do differently?:

Bring a huge bottle of water
Transition 2

Everything went smooth
Run
  • 1h 40m 55s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 07m 42s  min/mile
Comments:

Had to slow down my planned pace due to the heat. Took in a bunch of water to try and counter the damage done from the bike. Took too much and got feeling sick at mile 5. Started walking aid stations and alternating coke and water.
What would you do differently?:

Drink on the bike
Post race
Warm down:

Lay in the grass and dump bottles of water on myself

What limited your ability to perform faster:

If it's not clear a lack of water. Also living at the coast wasn't prepared for as much climbing as there was on the bike

Event comments:

I don't want to be too tough because this was an awesome deal on an early season 70.3. The post race food was pizza or rice? Didn't hang out for awards but looked like they were water bottles. It sucks because I enjoyed the course. It's a great challenge for Fl athletes. I'd be skeptical to do this again or the GFT due to the bike experience.
