Age Group Rank = 29/58
Pre-race routine:

Up at 330, left house at 4. Bagel with PB and coffee on the way. Arrived at 5, parked. Set up and waited in truck to stay warm. G1 and X2 just before the race.
Event warmup:

Short swim to acclimate.
Swim
  • 37m 47s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 47s / 100 yards
Comments:

Good swim - better than I expected given my training. Difficult to site on the bottom of the triangle into the sun. Not much contact.
What would you do differently?:

Train.
Transition 1
  • 03m 3s
Comments:

Slow, but first time this year.
What would you do differently?:

Practice?
Bike
  • 3h 27m 49s
  • 56 miles
  • 16.17 mile/hr
Comments:

Very poor. Did not train enough for this course. I got crushed by everyone - lost 137 places.
What would you do differently?:

Train hills - I knew that, just didnt do it.
Transition 2
  • 02m 44s
Comments:

The a-hole on the other side of the rack parked his front tire in my slot, so I had to move his bike. Also had to hit the portapotty. Also, had trouble getting my socks on. Not a great transition.
What would you do differently?:

I dont know.
Run
  • 2h 01m 38s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

Better than I could have expected, but I was hoping to break 2 hrs. I ran the whole time - no walk breaks even at the water stops - I was afraid I wouldn't start up again! Made up a few places after the horrific bike.
What would you do differently?:

Again, train hills more
Post race
Warm down:

Looked for a place to sit in shade, but once again, Rev3 did not think of this. The whole big registration tent had about 4 chairs (all taken) and a bunch of tables. There were some chairs scattered about in the sun. Had some water but couldnt eat yet. I was overheating like crazy and dead tired, but there was no where to go.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of serious training. I should be happy with my time, given my level of fitness.

Event comments:

Overall, the execution of the race by Rev3 was good, as usual. However, I can see things slipping - no pros, fewer exhibitors, less swag (no finisher jersey!), etc. Wondering if things are going downhill. Given the difficulty of the race and the need for early season training, not sure if I will take on the HIM next year - maybe dial back to the Oly. This was painful.
Thank you to themany enthusiastic volunteers who (as usual) came through every time!!
