Overall Rank = 72/143

Age Group Rank = 17/28
Pre-race routine:

Woke up, got ready then got kids up and ready to go. Coffee and donuts on they way to the race for breakfast, breakfast of mid-pack finishers! Since the swim was cancelled, racked the bike and got ready for the run.
Event warmup:

None, cold start
Swim
  • 05m 43s
  • 1200 meters
  • 29s / 100 meters
Comments:

Bad river current and debris, so they canceled the swim. Judging by the logs floating quickly downriver, it was the right call, but was disappointing. Replaced with a 1200m run. Started cold, but a fast pace for me (7:42/mile roughly)
What would you do differently?:

Next time I hope to actually swim.
Transition 1
  • 01m 24s
Comments:

Decent job getting into cycling shoes. Transition was a bit muddy so running wasn't a great idea.
What would you do differently?:

Spent a few seconds starting the tracking on my phone and getting computer up and running. If I stick with this, a dedicated device would be more efficient. But not bad for my first transition.
Bike
  • 41m 49s
  • 12.1 miles
  • 17.36 mile/hr
Comments:

Really enjoyed the bike segment. Tried to keep a good pace especially on uphills. My goal was to average 18 miles per hour and run around 40 minutes, and I was pretty well on my target speed, time above 40 minutes was mostly starting and stopping so I'm happy with how it ran.
What would you do differently?:

Drink a little more, go faster.
Transition 2
  • 02m 6s
Comments:

Again too much time messing with HRM/phone stuff. Not much hustle getting out.
What would you do differently?:

Move quicker
Run
  • 29m 32s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 55s  min/km
Comments:

Started off not feeling great, some early uphills didn't help and I walked a little bit for a water stop and then getting onto the bridge. Started feeling better cruising back down the bridge and through the rest of the coarse improved. Negative splits at each mile, actually felt better finishing the run than starting it.
What would you do differently?:

Drink a little more on bike and catch my breath a little on the end of the bike (maybe?). Wish I could have run every mile like the last one, would have been more like 27:30.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around a bit, had some gatorade.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Overall fitness level, time wasted in fooling with gadgets.

Event comments:

Very well organized and a great, fun course. Would have been nice to have had the swim, but the organizers made the right call I think with regards to everyone's safety. Nice of them to have a pre-race meeting for new athletes, I found it helpful. Overall a great event, I would like to run it again.

Started warmed up from run, an early steep hill spiked it to >180bpm. But then it settled into the 160s for the remainder of the ride.
Wind: Little
Course: Beautiful course on the Ohio River and downtown Cincinnati, closed to traffic. Being able to ride out US 50 is fun, not a road you can usually ride on. Worth doing this race just for the bike course really.
