Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 210/256
Pre-race routine:

Good night sleep, got up plenty hydration and sleep, got up early well rested, 3 BM's, 1 & half bagels with peanut butter, plenty of water, 1 cup coffee. took a claritin which raised my heart rate too much, never do that again, I believe my performance suffered
Event warmup:

no real warm-up but hung out in the water.
Swim
  • 46m 15s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 11s / 100 yards
Comments:

Around 1900 yards, my right calf and hamstring cramped up and was rough.
What would you do differently?:

Be lighter so I don't have to lug so much weight around.
Transition 1
  • 03m 18s
Comments:

Took my time to ensure I put on my socks comfortably.
What would you do differently?:

Would have known I needed to lie flat on my back with my feet in the air for the wetsuit rippers.
Bike
  • 3h 26m 44s
  • 56 miles
  • 16.25 mile/hr
Comments:

Needed to train harder for hills. Did not stay in aero position hardly at all. One rough patch of downhill caused my aero-water bottle to fly off. Had some difficulty getting my main chainring geared up and down
What would you do differently?:

Knowing this would be the hardest event, I would have spent much more time training for it, especially simulating hills. I would also not have eaten that claritin and tried to go aero more. Being heavier set on the downhills with wind gusts kept me from flying balls out, I was on the breaks alot because I did not feel balanced... instead I felt top heavy.
Transition 2
  • 03m 15s
Comments:

I was so ready to get off my bike, I was exhausted. I had no mind to get out of my shoes, or hop off the bike. i knew i was in bad shape when I got off that bike, it was painfull
What would you do differently?:

train more
Run
  • 3h 04m 22s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 14m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

Met up with Donny in transition and made it a quarter of the way with him doing 4:1 run/walks. I had to walk more and told him to go, at that point I switched to 3:1. I walked most of the aid stations and up all hills. the hills were brutal to my under-trained, overweight frame.
What would you do differently?:

weigh less and train hills. started out at 3:1 instead of 4:1
Post race
Warm down:

None really, I just hung out with the family. I did stretch out a lot that night and the next few days, which I believe helped a great deal.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

my race weight was 244 pounds... I need to be 225 or below next time i try something like this, the extra weight is really a burden.

Event comments:

Great race, Ironman does it better than anyone else
