Pre-race routine:

Race site was 40 minutes away with a 7:30am start. Left the house at 5:05am after normal pre-race breakfast. Was onsite early and breezed through packet pickup, body marking and chip pick up. Setup my transition area as was ready to warm up by 6:30
Event warmup:

I have not run in three weeks. Dealing with major hip issues and have been shut down with one one 4 mile run in 5 weeks. I had clue what to expect. I did go out for a run and it felt ok at best. It was super humid like the worst of the summer.

Given my hip, I knew the day was a real wildcard. I did manage to get in the pool for a good warmup.
Swim
  • 05m 15s
  • 300 yards
  • 01m 45s / 100 yards
Comments:

I got the good draw - no one in front thanks to the person in front no showing and the guy behind was slower than posted. I was to swim the course for the most part without issues. I did have two problems. The guy behind me tended to be in the middle of the lane. I was far enough ahead that it was no issue. At the 150 mark, I went under the lane and there was someone passing coming the other way in my out bound space. Literally swam under them.
What would you do differently?:

Pool swims are such a crap shoot. There was a ton of traffic ahead of me.
Transition 1
  • 01m 13s
Comments:

Decent but not great
Bike
  • 36m 5s
  • 12.7 miles
  • 21.12 mile/hr
Comments:

Fast course - my HR was really high and never really drifted lower. Passed by two guys on the course; passed everyone else
What would you do differently?:

The first mile was a little slow; struggled to get up to speed. Basically it was racing myself
Transition 2
  • 00m 56s
Comments:

Decent nothing spectacular
Run
  • 25m 42s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 08s  min/km
Comments:

Each mile was slower; the hip was hurting pretty good by the end - mainly with the glute minor and glut med.
What would you do differently?:

It was super hot and I know fatigue hit me; I wanted to run faster and had visions of a course PR off the bike. It was not to be and began to want to finish
Post race
Warm down:

Powerade and cold towel. I went and sat down. This was hot as I have been in along while. I did get a massage and was just pouring sweat.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not running really for six weeks hurt; the weather was as hot as I can remember. I really wanted a PR but it was not in the cards. I need this hip to heal so I can get back to really racing

Event comments:

Great race - amazing post race experience. Perfect for a beginner. It's short which means it about going hard. I enjoyed the race even though I was slower than the last two times I raced it. Maybe next year.

The race was smaller than in year's past but still a healthy number.
