Pre-race routine:

Woke up SUPER early and couldn't fall back asleep so I jsut got up anyway and took my sweet time packing the car and eating breakfast - a banana and bagel and about 1/2 of my Sustained Energy (which I actually had in the car on the way..) Got to the race early, set up transition in a decent spot and met lots of cool people and made some friends :) Got race ready.
Event warmup:

Jogged 1.25 miles in the racing flats sans socks to make sure they were good to go. Spun the bike into a low gear, practiced mounting and then decided I wasn't going to do it in the race anyway. I'm still not 100% on it and even on clipping in to my new cleats and the bike starts with an IMMEDIATE and steep uphill, so I skipped the flying mount...
Swim

  • 1750 yards
  • 01m 32s / 100 yards
Comments:

For some reason this swim was REALLY bad for me. I got in the water about 15' before my start to warm up. the problem was it was REALLY cold out - the air was only 55 at the start of the race... So I think I cooled off more than warmed up. My first lap felt horrific and my second lap felt better to start, but I felt like I was not swimming well. I guess I proved myself right. That time SUCKED. At first I thought maybe it was in my head and it was just long, or it was because I had to get out of the water, BUT I compared my time to Leanda Caves time and her time at the BP... Her time was faster today than in Boulder where as mine was over a minute slower... It was just a bad swim.
What would you do differently?:

Not "warm up" I don't know. I didn't feel mentally prepared for some reason. and not drop my damned goggles!!
Transition 1
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

I shouldn't complain about this transition. there was only one female (not including the pros) that was faster than me and only a hand full of guys, but I SHOULD have practiced more and done the flying mount. So the transition was good, but the getting on the bike not so much. I had decided to be conservative though.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike

  • 20.02 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike felt tight for the first 6 miles or so. My back and hips were VERY tight last night and yesterday, perhaps from travelling, but who knows, maybe I was just tight in getting used to my new bike position. I just felt a little tight in the butt and hips for a good portion of the first half of the bike. I was worried that this would give me trouble on the run, but it was fine by the time I hit the turn around and I cruised back up the false flat. Then VERY slow on that last hill
What would you do differently?:

Don't know, but start faster?? I LIKED the bike :)
Transition 2
  • 00m 57s
Comments:

First, I should say that it was COLD when THEN I must have stubbed my toe a little bit when I dismounted the bike. I noticed some pain in my toes, but didn't notice any blood - until later... Anyway, it took me FOREVER to get my new sneakers on and I should have taken offmy helmet before I even got there, but I wasn't thinking or something.
What would you do differently?:

I need to do something with the speed laces on the racing flats. They need to be a little looser to get my feet in and then tighter to run, but I had issues. Also, I probably should think about taking my helmet off as soon as I get off the bike... DUH :)
Run
  • 47m 25s
  • 6.18 miles

Comments:

I started out very easy on the run. My plan (after riding the course the day before) was to take the first lap easy due to the hills and then push the second lap - I definately neg split it as I hit lap one at 24:12. I started out VERY slow - maybe a little too slow because I was chatting with an older guy that I had played tag with on the bike that had "bring it on" across his behind :) Turns out he's on a small team who's coach was also there and ran with us for a minute or so and is sending me a pair of those shorts!! Anyway, I then pulled way and did OK. At the turn I couldn't tell if the only 2 women I saw in front of me were pros, OLY's or sprint course people and the nearest woman behind me was WAY behind me. I was told at the lap mark that I was in 2nd overall and leading my age group - not a good motivator, but it was also incorrect... Nonetheless, I motivated and had a nice second lap at 23:12. Although I wish I would have known that the girl in front of me was about 2' ahead of me going into the run, maybe I couldn't have caught her anyway. I felt kinda flat or unmotivated or something, but I have to say looking at my time - WOW!! I was only a few seconds slower than Cranberry (which I felt was a GREAT run for me) and this course was WAY tougher.
What would you do differently?:

Put a little heart into it...
Post race
Warm down:

jogged about a mile - this is the first time that I've done a real warm down...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of competition - it was tough knowing that there were only 8 people in my AG and not a HUGE showing overall. Plus no family friend support which was a first for me at a race also. I knew literally NO ONE at this race.

Event comments:

This was a fun little race in the middle of no where. I have to say that the volunteers and race directors were AWESOME and friendly and truly appreciative when I said "thanks" to just about every one of them. The other race participants were also friendly and great and oh yeah - I QUALIFIED FOR ALCATRAZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Course: 2 laps of a left hand triangle, but you had to exit the water and run around the arch before the second lap... Then out of the water and jog up the boat ramp - I dropped my goggles TWICE on this little run (I thought it was little, but others were complaining it was long - HA they should come to Loveland :) ) but it was COLD.

My GPS had this at 24.89 miles and my avg as 20 mph on the nose. Avg HR 181 and maxed at 194 - right at the hill at the beginning - no surprise, I planned to jsut hammer over the damned thing and then catch up on the ensuing downhill and false flat down - glad I pre-rode it yesterday. IT was COLD when I started the bike. I was freezing on the first downhill, but was fine by mile 5.
Wind: Some
Course: Out and back with a little lollipop on the end. Started out directly up the steepest hill of the race, then a few little rollers to get to the main part of the course which was mostly straight with a few rollers and false flat areas - all downhill on the out. Then the lolipop area was rolly with one other small hill. then back up the false flat and back to the lake. this ended with one MOTHER of a hill to finish. Up it, then down it. I had pre-decided to take it easy on the return on this hill to keep the legs settled for the run.

Course: VERY hilly!! Just about 1000' of elevation on this course. Mostly in one hill too... IT was 2 laps on a loop with a spur at the back side. Started with a flat and a few small risers then a slight false flat to the turn around, then back a bit until the MONSTER hill - up and down...
