Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4AM to pack my stuff in the van and get ready for the hour-long ride to the race site. Coffee was a must. Had some cheerios with soy milk. Had to park at downtown parking garage and walk a few blocks to set up transition.
Event warmup:

Wasn't feeling energetic for this race. Had a lot on my plate the past few weeks and it's really taken its toll. Didn't do a lot of warmup, just a little light jogging and stretching. Had a 10-minute walk to get to the ferry boat dock that took us to Escape Island.
Swim
  • 29m 31s
  • 1232 yards
  • 02m 24s / 100 yards
Comments:

Very tightly packed start. Only one wave for ~700 or so people. Current was strong, pushing everyone to the left. The first 200 yards or so was a lot of contact...elbows, knees and feet everywhere. One big surprise was when a man's head surfaced right in my armpit! Can't say THAT'S ever happened to me! Anyway, overall I finally got my navigation great but there were about 5 or 6 occasions when somebody to my right was being pushed into me by the current and wouldn't straighten out. I wasn't fast enough to go past them and steer myself the right way, so it was either get pushed further off course or slow down and let them get ahead of me and let them go off course. That can REALLY eat away at the time. Also, closer to shore, the current got very choppy.
What would you do differently?:

Start further to the right so there wouldn't be people in that area to push me the wrong way.
Transition 1
  • 01m 14s
Comments:

Very windy and lots of construction going on in the area. Took some extra time with the obstacles as well as sand that had blown into the street.

This timing group also ranks the transitions. I was the 2nd fastest transition in my age group and 55th out of everyone, male and female.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing more I could do.
Bike
  • 1h 20m 22s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.55 mile/hr
Comments:

Lots of construction in downtown areas plus the streets weren't in the greatest shape. Lots of holes to dodge and windy between buildings. Then the turn to go east was like hitting a wall of wind. Especially going over the first causeway bridge (the second one wasn't so bad) on the second lap after the quads are already screaming!

Although I had checked to make sure my bike computer was working the night before, it wasn't working for the race. I NEED MY COMPUTER!
What would you do differently?:

I pushed as hard as I could that day.
Transition 2
  • 01m 34s
Comments:

I can't believe I had such a brain fart! I couldn't find my transition area! Each rack was marked with the specific number, and I knew that someone at the end of the row had tied a scarf to the rack to help mark it, but I JUST COULDN'T FIND MY STUFF! I must've wasted 20-30 seconds looking at race numbers on the racks that didn't match mine and finally just looked at the ground where I knew my red-and-white striped towel was and just threw the bike on the rack.

(P.S. my specific number was on the OTHER side of the rack from where I layed my stuff, which is why the numbers didn't match...DUHHHH!)
What would you do differently?:

Get my head out of my backside and pay better attention!
Run
  • 52m 56s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

I was pretty tired from that windy bike. Going up the McArthur Causeway bridge I wasn't even sure I could keep it up without walking. I had to though, so I just kept keeping some semblance of a run up.
What would you do differently?:

Get better rest in the few days before the race.
Post race
Warm down:

Lots of water, Endurox, walked around a lot and used the make-shift shower they set up.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Started out very tired. Not all that motivated.

Event comments:

This was an EXTREMELY challenging race between the wind and bridges. I would like to try it again. It's kind of interesting at the beginning when they ferry you out near the island you have to jump ship and swim the rest of the way.
