Pre-race routine:

Went to Gulf Shores on Friday night to attend USAT Ambassador Training on Saturday.
Raceday up at 5am. Stayed with two other guys from my town.
Breakfast was a PowerBar and some Gatorade.
Got to the race site, racked my bike and went to the swim start and got in the water and stretched out for the swim.
Event warmup:

Just did some basic easy stroking and practiced my entry and exits.
Swim
  • 15m 49s
  • 1000 yards
  • 01m 35s / 100 yards
Comments:

Great swim! The taper really helped. I felt like I was really cruising. The start was a time-trial interval start. I overtook a couple of folks at the first buoy and it made things difficult. Had to compensate for the current. Got stung by a jelly fish about 200yds from the exit.
What would you do differently?:

Spent too much time on breastroke. I need to rely on my training and just swim and not worry about everyone around me.
I was really pleasantly surprised by my time. I smoked it.
Transition 1
  • 04m 40s
Comments:

I wasted time fiddling with my race belt. Couldn't get it to snap.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster.
Bike
  • 1h 12m 17s
  • 20 miles
  • 16.60 mile/hr
Comments:

I conquered the bridge better than I thought. As I came down the first pass there was an immediate turn to the right at the bottom. Then a U-turn back under the bridge to turn around and go back up the other side.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe push a littel harder to average 17mph.
Transition 2
  • 03m 8s
Comments:

When I got back to my rack position, there was a bike in my spot and my running stuff had gotten moved.
I walked out the transition to control my HR.
Run
  • 1h 04m 27s
  • 4.5 miles
  • 14m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

It took the first half mile to get my legs working coming off the bike. I had to walk. My training served me well. I thought I was going slower than I was.
What would you do differently?:

Work to walk less.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Energy level was down towards the end of the run despite 3 gels throughout the race.

Event comments:

Team-Magic always puts on a good race. This is one that I would do next year. The ocean water temperature was perfect.

I am really pleased that I crushed my goal of breaking 3 hours. Following the training plan I downloaded made all the difference in the world. This and the encouragement I got from my blog mates really helped.
