Swim
What would you do differently?: Training would be helpful in getting my swim time down. I felt good out there. Had some trouble with the chop. It kept me from getting into a good rythem. The chop also made it hard to site the bouys. Transition 1
Comments: Long trip up from the water to the transition zone. The ground was nothing but sharp rocks. So I gingerly walked the 100 yards or so to the transition zone. The transition zone was just gravel. It was a very very slow transition. Also put on the arm warmers. That took a bit more time. The wet suit came off ok. Stuck on the heals but only briefly. What would you do differently?: Take a pair of shoes down to the water edge so I can run up to T1. Bike
Comments: I really went out and attacked the rolling hills. Was really riding people down the first 30 miles before my nutrition wasn't enough to keep me going. Hit a somewhat of a bonk at 54 miles in. Glad it was a fast downhill finish. 1 person passed me on the bike. I passed at least 30 people though. What would you do differently?: Do a better job of previewing the course. I went in basically blind. I looked at it on paper, but it was so much more challening to ride then I expected. I went out attacking and had a good day. If I knew it was as challenging as it was, I'm not sure if I would have attacked the way I did. But I had a good time out there. Transition 2
Comments: Again, the pavement was very rocky. So I left my bike shoes on and ran in from there. Added a little bit fo time, but I'd rather be comfortable and avoid a sharp rock cutting my foot, then running a half marathon. What would you do differently?: Nothing, I felt good during this transition. The only slow part was getting rid of the biking gear. Aka the arm warmers and spare tube I had in the 1 piece pocket. With a better transition zone surface to run on, I'm sure I can drop this down to under a minute. Run
Comments: I thought with how hard I went on the bike that I would have trouble with the run. My run miles have been really strong lately. I was hoping for a great time out there. I didn't think I'd do as well as I did! What would you do differently?: I would go out harder. I had way to much energy on that last lap. I would also continue taking the salt pills. I stopped once i hit the run. I started to cramp up the last mile or so when I really poured on the speed. Post race
Warm down: Didn't really warm down. Just grabbed some food and went out to cheer rob on. What limited your ability to perform faster: Bad nutrition and lack of swim training. But ripped off a 43 min PR. I felt really good about the race. But I know I can go faster! Event comments: Good race, still on the small side of things. But I'm sure will get better in time! This is a great training race for IMCDA as the bike course is full of rolling hills unlike WF LC. Which basically has a long flater section then a tough couple of climbs near the end. I would recommend this race, but be prepared for a rough road to bike on. Don't expect any flat spots on the bike. It is a great race and will likely do this race several more times.
