Pre-race routine:

Standard breakfast, cereal with protein shake and some almonds. Took a GU right before the race started.
Event warmup:

No warm-up.
Swim
  • 34m 36s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 19s / 100 meters
Comments:

I suck at swimming! I was really hoping and expecting to do better than this. Very dissapointing, second to last in my age group, eck. The course was not very well marked though, some of the markers came undone and started drifting. I think I had some pretty big problems with navigation also, felt like I was all over the place.
What would you do differently?:

Better navigation mostly, aside from that I just need to practice my swimming more. Could really go for a swim coach but can't afford it.
Transition 1
  • 04m 5s
Comments:

Went smoother than I expected actually, suit came right off, everything was in place and went pretty quick. There was a long run from the swim to the transition zone though which was a bit annoying but nothing I can do about that.
What would you do differently?:

Could have gone a little faster, but overall I am happy with how I did.
Bike
  • 1h 11m 57s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.72 mile/hr
Comments:

No turns, no hills, not a lot of gear changing, very easy ride, all about just pushing as hard as I could. I came out much faster than expected, very very pleased with my time.
What would you do differently?:

I think I did pretty dang well on this, don't know if I could have done much else, maybe push very slightly harder as I still had plenty left in the tank for the run, felt like I was going pretty close to all out anyway though.
Transition 2
  • 01m 23s
Comments:

Nice and quick, no complaints.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, this one went pretty smooth.
Run
  • 43m 34s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

Very happy with my run, averaging 7 minute miles after a hard bike and through some soft sand is awesome. Not only that I felt fresh for the entire run pretty much, even after finishing I felt like I could go longer. This run gives me a lot of confidence going into Wildflower next Month.
What would you do differently?:

Push a little harder, I felt pretty good through the run. It was difficult trying to push my legs to go any faster and I was going so fast I was concerened I was going to burn out, but I stayed fresh the entire time and finished strong. First time in a long time I finished the run thinking I could have gone a little harder, but considering my time I am very excited.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and chatted with friends, grabbed a hot dog and oranges.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I REALLY need to learn how to swim better, that is my gigantic glaring weakness right now. Buying a tri bike I think could shave some time for me on the bike also. Run I'm looking good just need to keep up the training and work hard on eating riht to drop a few pounds.

Event comments:

A bit of a bare bones race but seeing as it's probably the cheapest oly distance race in so-cal I don't mind, they had the important stuff and it was a fun atmosphere and a great day. I had a blast! This was my first oly distance race and I LOVE it. This is my distance, it's perfect (well, the swim could be shorter but oh well). I came within 35 seconds of my goal time so I am very happy with that. Only 4 weeks to Wildflower now, this race gave me some good confidence going into that. I'm still concerened about the distance and hills but I think I will be ok. Really need to get my swimming figured out also!

Course: Up and down the strand. Pretty much dead flat but with a decent NE blowing wind. Wind was actually pretty mild by Coronado standards though, so that was nice. Going North it helped quite a bit and coming back South had to fight it. It wasn't terrible though and was a very fast course.
