Pre-race routine:

We were staying just across the bridge in downtown SD, so we were able to sleep in until about 5:45. The only reason we even woke up this early is because we heard hwy 75 would be shutdown. It ended up not being shutdown, so I had 2+ hours to kill until my start time.
Event warmup:

Normal stretches and some swimming out past the first bouy and back
Swim
  • 22m 20s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 22s / 100 yards
Comments:

I believe this was my best swim to date. I felt good right from the start. Although I lost the fastest swimmers in my group before the first turn, I was able to pull ahead of the main pack and not have to worry about too much contact with others. I heard this swim course was actually a bit short, which might explain my quick time, but that just makes up for the quarter mile run from the water exit to the transition area which added another couple of minutes to my T1 time.
What would you do differently?:

I looked for some people to draft off of, but unfortunately they were all either too fast or too slow.
Transition 1
  • 03m 15s
Bike
  • 1h 10m 35s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 21.12 mile/hr
Comments:

Except for the crosswinds, this was a great bike course. 2 loops with only one small climb. This was also my first race on my new P2C. I was literally in the aero bars 99% of the time. I started out pretty fast(22-23mph) and it felt good. I thought this was odd since I was headed south and this looked like the direction the wind was coming from before the race started. I figured that once I get to the turn around that I'd be flying and would easily beat my goal of a 70 minute split. Unfortunately there was no tail wind headed north. Regardless, I did post my fastest bike split to date on any length course. I'll give credit to my new cervelo for that.
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

standard transition, nothing special.
Run
  • 50m 16s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

My garmin had this course at about 6.3 miles, so I averaged right around an 8 minute mile. I was hoping for closer to 7:30, but I guess I didn't have it in me. I think what really killed me was the sand running in the first two miles and the killer head wind on the last 3 miles. I'm not overly dissapointed with my run since I was still able to break the 2:30 mark on my overall time, but I will definitely be increasing my run training for now.

Event comments:

This is definitely a great race and decently priced for an Oly distance in CA. I would definitely do it again.
