Comments:

Well I learned ocean swim is a different bird. I should have taken the swim clinic the day before to get learned on how to get out there. I didn't get over the waves at all and kept getting pushed back. Once out there it was a good swim until I had to head back in. I rode a few waves but then got totally taken up by a huge swell...pulled under, flipped upside down, sideways and it spat me out facing back out to sea! It must have been a decent swell because I could feel the water coming in was MUCH colder. Luckily I didn't take in any water but had I been more unconfortable in the water this would have really freaked me out! Rest of the swim went well.
What would you do differently?:

take the swim clinic, get out over the swells better
Transition 1
  • 02m 37s
Comments:

Long transition area, otherwise not bad
Bike
  • 1h 10m 33s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 21.13 mile/hr
Comments:

Didn't have the bike segment I wanted to. I got in kind of a funk on the way back and didn't really have the energy to motor up the hills the way I wanted to and had before when I rode the course.
What would you do differently?:

Took it easier on the downhills and motored up the hills better
Transition 2
  • 01m 38s
Comments:

Good transition other than the fact that I put my bike on the wrong rack at first! Once I found it it was pretty fast though
Run
  • 44m 29s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

A really good run for me, I actually suprised myself here. Miles 2-5 were really strong. I took a gel in at mile two, and four, and felt better after doing so. Felt so much better that I tried another 1/2 gel or so at about mile 4.5 and it didn't help...a little too soon. Took water at every aid station(every mile). Tried to push the finish but didn't have it
What would you do differently?:

Not taken that last 1/2 gel

Event comments:

An awesome course and awesome race. Too bad my work buddies bailed! The travelling made it tougher but was worth it to check out the old stomping grounds and spend some time with Kiki. First oly and was really happy with my performance despite the setbacks on the swim.
