  • Comments: Perspective The overall winner, Frederik Van Lierde, completed the same course on the same day in 8:08:59, including an inconceivable 4:33:30 bike split. In the words of my favorite Jamaican philosopher Ali G, “Respek.” What an incredible human feat. My friend who joined me for the Ironman took it easy and cruised to finish a couple hours before me. A year to the date, he lay in a hospital bed as the unfortunate victim of a hit-and-run. A year to the date, we were barely on speaking terms. Feeling guilty about the inability to do much from Morocco, we slowly mended our relationship over the phone throughout his recovery. A year to the date of nearly losing one of my best friends for the past 14 years, we toasted champagne to celebrate an Ironman finish in picturesque Nice, France of all places. My lovely wife, 2 sons, family, and friends accompanied us. Ironman is inundated with such stories, and this makes it beautiful. Following the race, I was somewhat paralyzed to learn

  • Comments: How can I not rank my first IM as Best? One benefit to finishing close to the end my kids got to see the fireworks show at the finish. They loved that. It's a great race. I'm no expert on Ironman races but if you're up for a challenging course this is a good one.

  • Comments: As it's my first Ironman, I have nothing to compare it to except a couple of half IM's, and this was was better in almost every way,

  • Comments: The swim and the bike were fun. Long, and tiring but not painful. The run is the actual hard part and it hurt bad. When my buddy and his friend Dan finished IMC 2 years ago, they did nothing the following year and Dan still has no interest in ever doing another IM (he was sub 12 for IMC). I had no idea how I'd feel about it after the race was done. Well, I'm already planning for the next IM (definately one I can drive to) in a few years (it's hard on the family) but will definately do some 70.3s and such in the meantime.

  • Comments: My initial plan for the race was probably much the same as anyone else’s. After a controlled swim ride the bike fairly easily then finish it off with whatever I had left in the marathon. However, five weeks out I picked up an injury to my knee and this prevented me from training for a full week. It also meant I only completed about six runs in the final five weeks, all less that 30 minutes long with the exception of one 40 minute run which ended up irritating the injury. I therefore fully expected to have to walk most of the marathon. Given that walking takes pretty much no energy at all I thought my best option would be to ride pretty much as hard as I could in an attempt to save a bit of the time I thought I would loose during the marathon. The advice I had picked up before race day was to not try anything new, take the bike easy, practice transitions and have a nutrition plan ready (and stick to it). I ignored all of this advice. I used a top tube box for the first time

  • Comments: It would be perfect if the run course was better and if there was ICE on the run course.
