  • Comments: I love, love, love this race. The bike course is the best. I wish the UCLA Tri Team was better organized about marketing the race, though. This was the smallest turnout I've seen (it's my fourth). While I like the race being smaller, I just don't want to see the race go away because of it.

  • Comments: The post-race stuff was much better than the past two years. Maybe it helped that I was in the first wave but I was able to stuff myself with all the freebies. All five segments of this race were faster than last year, so I'm pleased with that. The bike should have been faster but I'm learning. The company doing the timing was pretty lame. Slow with the unsorted results. They've been posted but they're sorted even worse than the past couple of years. They also need a timing mat near the top of the big hill to make sure people do the full four laps on the bike. One of my favorite races. I'll do it every year I'm able to.

  • Comments: The race was much better this year. The swim didn't have the bunching in the ends that last year did. The bike course is awesome. The run course would be fun if I hadn't been in so much pain. The post-race stuff was better than last year, too (thank you Muscle Milk!). I am so doing this race every year.

  • Comments: Very disorganized for a 6th annual race. Lot's of volunteers but they had conflicting information. Overheard another participant who had done the race last year mention the previous years were much better. Don't know what happened this year.

  • Comments: This is my first Tri, so I have no basis for comparison. I was horribly underprepared, but I am glad that I am too stubborn to have not shown up. The last hill on the bike loop killed me. BUT I FINISHED!

  • Comments: I have to say this is a pretty organized race for college students (UCLA is my alma mater and love it though I do there's still only so much you can expect from college kids), with a good expo and good food for a small race. Like that they have free pics on Flickr too. Transitions were a little crazy and hopefully someday they'll find a way to hold the swim that's not kind of weird. I really wanted to do this race since it was my first tri ever and I wanted to see how far I've come (didn't hurt either that it was cheap, close and I knew the course well), and as a mini warmup for Oceanside. Wasn't quite as much improvement as I would have liked, but again, I did hold myself back a little. Plus I'm happy because my confidence level is just so much higher now, there was no freaking out in the swim, my bike handling skills are better and overall I just felt more comfortable because I know myself better athletically, if that makes sense? Double bonus, in addition to getting a $15

  • Comments: This was my first triathlon so I don't have anything to compare it to. However, I was very satisfied with the race and my performance. I had ridden the bike course two weeks before so I knew what to expect. The race went off just as I planned so I was very pleased with my preparation. Now I just need to drop the weight and train more.

  • Comments: Fun event. Not all communication was handled spotlessly, but you have to cut the organizers slack because they are college students--and really took the event very seriously. Only major complaint is lack of any water on run course. I didn't care--don't usually drink on 5K's--but with all the newbie entrants, I suspect there were people who could have used the hydration at that point in the race. Cool temps helped out there. (Note: Overall results were segregated into "Open" and "Collegiate" races.)

  • Comments: Please bring back the reverse triathlon course and all its idiosyncrasies. It's a good tri the way they've changed it, but the old reverse tri was a wonderfully unique event with challenges not found anywhere else. I don't expect that it will change back, so I'll have to add one of the other reverse tri's that are now in the local area to next year's schedule.

  • Comments: Overall, I am glad I went and raced. It was fun and doing this race gives me an idea of how it will go in the coming months for the other races I have planned. Its weird how you kind of forget how races are in the off season. I had a blast this weekend hanging out with Yanti, Faeron, Matt and Jocelyn.

  • Comments: UCLA Iron Bruin Race Report March 2, 2008 “Triathlon will humble anybody.” I was waiting for my wave to start when I overheard someone make the above statement while watching the race. I thought to myself, yes, that’s true. I don’t do Triathlon to compete against others. I don’t compete with my age group. I race to compete with myself - to overcome a challenge and to persevere. And here we are waiting for our lowly “Sprint” to start. This is not even close to an IronMan distance; it’s a Sprint. So, how can this itsy bitsy teeny-weeny little race be humbling? Well, it is. UCLA decided to change their course. I was mentally prepared for the 4 mile run, 10 mile bike, ½ mile Run and a 400 meter swim. It used to be more like a “Quadathlon” than a Triathlon but, although it was a challenge, I was looking forward to the ‘old’ setup. A few days before the race I check out the course to prepare for race day. I am already mentally prepared for the race and I find out they change the

  • Comments: I had a great time doing my first triathlon, the race was fun and organized (they could have used someone down by the parking structure but that was about it), the course was challenging, but doable and it was nice to be somewhere I was already familiar with. I think it was the perfect first race for me :).

  • Comments: A great race to get back into the swing of things. First time I've run without any problems. I think I held back a little too much. Can't wait to do this again. Reporting one day after and I feel great, rejuvenated and ready to turn the training up. ChiRunning has really helped my running and my knee.

  • Comments: Overall I thought this was a good race...I'd probably do it again. It'll be fun to see my improvement by this time next year. I should be in a lot better shape and I'm hoping to shave a good 20 to 25 minutes off next time.

  • Comments: Ironbruin is a fun race. The swim is a little wacky, the bike is grueling, and the run is void of water...but overall it was a fun race with great volunteers, a fun expo, schwag and a kick-ass goody bag. It's a great sprint for anyone who like hills!

  • Comments: Packet pickup was very smooth and the goody bag/contents was the best ever. The swim was a no-worse cluster fcuk than most open-waters, though slower swimmers (like slower bikers) should have been advised to stay to the outside. It is a bit bizarre in a sprint to have first/last waves 2 hrs apart. It means the slower runners in the latter waves will have to run in traffic. Bike course was hilly and technical; even a few inches or a foot wider on the 90-degree turn lanes at the bottom of downhills would have been very helpful. For safety, no passing on turns is important, but it was very frustrating, not to mention dangerous, to get stuck behind a bunch of bikers riding their brakes and weaving on those end turns. No mile markers and no water on the run. Volunteers were very plentiful, very helpful, and just rocked. End-of-race expo was small but wonderful. Food was good and plentiful. Raffle was neat and more giveaways for all at the end. Overall, a very well-planned and

  • Comments: Seemed a little disorganized this year, most notably there was no standard marking and some of the volunteers were not able to answer any questions. I have pretty much been sick since Jan so overall not a bad race for only running twice and riding once before the race. No swimming either. So that is why I marked it as Too Hard otherwise it would have been Just Right. I did this last year also and for some reason I really love this race even though it kicks my butt. I will do it every year I am around to do it.

  • Comments: The new timing company, Milliseconds Sports Timing, put together a very poor results format, with only a one view of the data listing everyone in order of finish. No age group or gender breakdown. They didn't even bother to clean up the results, often showing the same participant with two or three listings. The previous year the results were very easy to interpret and it was possible to compare times and splits with others in your division and to see your over all rankings per sport. With this company’s way of displaying the results, you pretty much have to look through each person's times to find out what your rank was. As much of a pain as this was in my age group division, it was too much trouble to bother with to find out where I ranked over all in each leg of the race. Very amateur.

  • Comments: Fun challenging course. Garmin lost signal under trees so mileage was off. Tight bike course not much room to manuever especially on sharp turns at the bottom of almost every hill.

  • Comments: Fun fun fun! I really enjoyed it and look forward to pushing it with everything I got next year! I can't wait!!! It is not a race for pure beginners that's for sure. The bike portion is tough and the bike to swim transition is really tough as well. I was able to use my lap chrono with accuracy as I hit the lap button everytime the transition thing beeped. Here are my actual times which coincide with official race results: 0:37:15 RUN 0:02:27 T1 0:42:51 BIKE 0:03:50 T2 0:06:54 RUN 0:16:22 SWIM 1:49:38 FINAL TIME
