  • Comments: The only negative was that they ran out of medals. I know I will get one, but it happened. Otherwise, almost a perfectly run race. The also raise a ton of money for childhood Cancer Treatments. Like 1,300,000 plus.

  • Comments: This is a really great race. It is well organized and the size of the event is perfect. I plan on doing this race next year. More importantly, the fundraising for the Children's Hospital of LA is top notch. It was an honor to be apart of it.

  • Comments: Now, my run split was ~2.5 minutes slower than last year. My overall time was ~5 minutes faster. That gives you a great indication as to how far my swim bike combo has come. I couldn't be happier with this result. I know my run will come back fast. I know I'm going to be able to be a better runner than I ever was come next year. I know, because I did it with my swim and bike. Since my improvements over the last year in my swimming especially, everyone keeps asking me, "How did you improve so much."...and I tell them, "I swam my ass off."...the response is the same, "I mean, what did you fix or change?" They are always looking for you to tell them the secret. The magic bullet that improved my swim by 4.5 minutes in one year. I tell them again, "I just swam a lot"...they look at you perplexed. Rather than taking it to heart, it seems like they are pissed you won't give them the secret. Here's a clue....THAT IS THE SECRET! The secret is, what you think is a lot, probably isn't. What I did,

  • Comments: Ended up about 20 minutes faster than last year, most of the time was made up on the bike. Just need to watch out for the speedbumps as I heard there was a crash in the Classic Distance race on Sunday involving 2 riders and 1 speedbump.

  • Comments: I always end up doing this race at the last minute because my employer is a sponsor and comps the registration, but honestly, after doing this one two times, I have nothing bad to say about it. Nautica Malibu is a great race, albeit slightly spendy $$$ if you're paying the registration out of pocket. Definitely one of, if not the nicest swims of any tri that I've ever done.

  • Comments: This was a very tough pill to swallow. I should also mention in the interest of full disclosure that Tim Hola was there but raced elite. He's a top 35-39yo and finished 3rd at IM 70.3 WC last week in Vegas...he went 2:02:xx and crushed us. That didn't feel good. One thing the winner said to me that really made me feel like crap was "Hey, I guess the fast guys didn't show up today". That really hit me hard because he was right....or right and wrong. The fast guy did show up and happened to race Elite even though he is an age grouper normally. It really lite a fire under me to keep pushing to get better. I want to be up there battling with the best. Does that mean I want to go Pro? No...I started this far too late in life to get that very last bit that it would take to compete as a Pro. But I do think I can compete with the best AG's. I do think I have what it takes to do that...so that is my goal. I know it will probably take a few years but so be it. I will continue to do everything

  • Comments: I'm 24 and if I was still competing in the 18-24 group I would have WON! but I turn 25 soon so I was in the 25-29 group for the first time for this race. those girls are fierce! The ocean can be unprdictable. The bike is somewhat challenging but the run is flat. train on rolling hills and you'll be good to go!

  • Comments: I went into this race with two-weeks notice and knew it was not going to be a stellar race for me. Just getting into build mode for IM AZ in November and looked at this race mainly as a baseline check/"how am I doing" exercise and it turns out that I'm right around where I thought I was. A little disappointed that I didn't have it in me to push a little harder on the bike, but overall, I had a good time and actually enjoyed this race. Will definitely do this one again.

  • Comments: My Goal was a 2:30 and I got a 2:29 and some change. Cannot complain about the time since I crushed my last years olympic time by 20 mins or so. This is on account of the focus of run training and just overall focus of the other disciplines. I was very happy with the race as it made me realize that I can accomplish a lot of the goals I have set for myself (IMAZ, BQ, KONA qualify) only if I put the right training, focus and discipline into it. Though a small Age Group, I was 16 out of 80. That's only 6 away from a top 10, and that's only 13 away from a top 3, and it's 15 away from being number 1. I know, seems impossible, and unlikely, but my mind is set, I'm going to do this. Praise God for giving me strength to endure.

  • Comments: One of the longest established and high profile events in the U.S. With the sprint (the "Classic") and its celebrity division filling up earlier every year, the Oly is only going to be more and more popular. This is one of the best opportunities to get a taste of an Ironman type event at the Oly & sprint distance. Major pros in the Oly every year--this year Matty Reed and Julie Dibens were the winners--so it really has a "big time" flavor.

  • Comments: Disappointed I didn't win the weekend at the Wynn resort in Vegas. Otherwise happy with my performance, improved time as compared to Strawberry Fields, even with longer and hillier bike course in Malibu.

  • Comments: An awesome course and awesome race. Too bad my work buddies bailed! The travelling made it tougher but was worth it to check out the old stomping grounds and spend some time with Kiki. First oly and was really happy with my performance despite the setbacks on the swim.

  • Comments: A little more crowded this year than last year. they added 500 more people to a 1500 person course. only time it was obvious was in transition and at the start and end of the race. I bettered my time over last year by 6 minutes which i'm thrilled about! next year i want to do a sub 3 hour race. I think it is doable. if i didn't forget my darned socks in my bag, i would have been under 3:10. ah well... quite a few of my teammates were out there so it was nice to see so many familiar faces. a few were out there cheering as well. so while jeff was not there to cheer me on as my #1 cheerleader, it was nice to see so many famailiar faces at various points along the course. because my wave was last and i'm a bit slower than my teammates, they were all done and waiting for me near the finish/in the finish chute. that was nice. and louis took a bunch of pix, as always. i look forward to coming back next year and doing much better. i really want to go sub 3 and i think

  • Comments: Somehow, I won a prize package that they gave to 13 people. It was awesome. A pair of Kswiss shoes, an xterra bag and a bunch of other stuff. I don't know how that happened. I couldn't figure out what the announcer meant when he kept yelling "and our winner is Justin." I mean, I was happy with my time but I was pretty sure I hadn't won the race. One of the volunteers had to explain it to me.

  • Comments: I really liked this race. Expensive, yes, but for me it was everything you could ask for in an Olympic distance tri. Plus, the fact that I accomplished two of my goals in one race (20 mph bike average and sub 50 minute 10K) was a nice bonus.

  • Comments: Course was dangerous, registration too expensive, ran out of race t-shirts 1.5 hrs before race start, overly hyped for an oly thats nothing special...... Last 72 hours I was working on about 12 hrs sleep, 14 hour work/school say the day before, I was sick and I had to get up at 4AM to make it to Malibu super early to get parking and be ready for a 7AM wave start. Also training right through the race and came in with flat legs.... There's all my excuses

  • Comments: I have never done the Malibu "classic" as it is now known. this was the first Oly they've done since the sprint/classic sold out so fast. i'm really glad i did it. I haven't done an Oly since 2005, which was a shitty race for me a mere 2 weeks after my HIM. This race I did better. My swim was sucky for reasons not pertaining to my ability to swim but due to my stupid decision of putting sunblock on my face...sigh... my bike split was better for sure which i am happy about. my biking more has certainly paid off. my run, surprisingly was just as fast as it was in 2005, however it really wasn't great timewise because this was a totally flat course whereas the nyc tri is hilly central park. so...timewise, i was on par. but really, i need to spend more time running. i am glad i did the race. felt good overall. a little tired afterwards but nothing out of the ordinary.
