  • Comments: An enjoyable race, mostly flat surfaces and good pool to swim. The ride through town is somewhat unnerving in the traffic even for an experienced rider.

  • Comments: The race volunteers were less than helpful for the most part. The biggest complain is by far the lack of restroom facilities. Many people travel from out of town for races, and you expect to have a bathroom (at least a port o john) available to you. The man who opened up the PE center was less than helpful, and was actually smug and condescending when asking where things were. It was like he couldn't believe that we didn't know our way around the PE center and he kept referring to signs that didn't exist. He was "friendly" when you walked in, when he greeted you, but woe to you if you asked him any questions. I don't know who he is, but he should not be in a position to help people. Additionally, the volunteers on the run course just stood there. There were portions of the run that were not fully marked and the volunteer just stared at you until you asked which way to go. The police presence was wonderful, but the volunteers were not helpful at all. In packet pickup, most volunteers

  • Comments: I liked doing the swim and bike portion of the race. The run course needs to be redone; I'm not a fan of urban-athalons. There were no bathroom facilities except for when the pool building was open, so before and after the building was open you were out of luck. The Police support was fantastic but other volunteer efforts were bad. There was a line of 80 people to get body marked and there was only 1 person doing body marking, so my wife grabbed a marker and started marking people. The girls at the water tables were just standing by the table and not actually handing out and water (also no cheers or enthusiasm from them). The awards were also kind of lame, I took 2nd in age and got a wicking running hat. I like the hat but it was pretty much the same thing you got for entering the 2013 try charleston race.

  • Comments: A few things: 1. no idea where the bathrooms are to start the race. 2. The swim is a mess after the first 50 people. People don't seem to have much of an idea of what they can swim. 3. Lots of inexperienced riders wandering on the bike course. Stay right people, pass on the left.

  • Comments: I've read other reviews and agree with the comments about lack of restrooms. Students were the best ones to ask where the facilities were. The police were good but lets remember they're getting paid. The volunteers are volunteers and I think they were fine and should be thanked for being there. As for the guy at the check-in desk at Blatt fitness center, I heard the students complaining about his "usual bad attitude" :-) I couldn't hear a word of the pre-race instructions - too much echo in there and I'm old. There were a great deal of novices on the three-lap circuit bike course. Many didn't understand the keep right except to pass concept. The run has hills & steps but it was fun going through the nice parts of the USC campus. Both the bike and run courses were a little short. That's OK too since it is an early season race. The Setup folks know what they're doing and as always put on a good race. I had fun and want to try this one again.

  • Comments: They need to make sure people that sign up in "Open" really belong there. There was a woman behind me that finished dead last in women's race and beat only an 81 year old man.I heard from lots of people that she clogged up the whole swim lanes. She took twice as long in pool as everyone else around her. They also need to get an accurate 5k. I have done this race several times and it has not been 5k yet. I do love racing with Setup. Other than these two things, they put on great races.

  • Comments: Bike course safety was much better this year. The only real problems were with inexperienced cyclists riding three abreast into a couple of the turns. I had to brake pretty hard once to avoid riding up the backside of one of them,

  • Comments: Be sure to check your swim time on line. They will not send reminders to do so and they will not tell you how to do it. You have to go back to registration site. Once they publish it you are SOL.

  • Comments: Granted, I have a bad attitude right now, but I'm not sure I'll do this race again next year. (I haven't checked, but it might conflict with the Columbia Marathon -- that would be a convenient excuse!) I hate pool swims for exactly the reason that screwed me today, and the bike course is just scary dangerous. Harden Street especially had me spooked today. You're going 28+mph down a busy road with numerous cross-streets, and just one car not paying attention could spell disaster. I really don't think it's worth it for a small sprint.

  • Comments: Good race, typical of setup events. Will be back for round 3 next year! Was really happy with my performance, 12th/400 is way more than I expected. Racing in the open division may be in my near future. Gotta get that bike split down!

  • Comments: I certainly cannot complain about first in AG. That came as quite a surprise. In fact, I thought I was 4th and left the race after chatting to folks so that I could get home and spend time with the kids. And do bear in mind that in fact FOUR people aged 40-44 finished ahead of me. It's just that they were racing open. I'm biased because this is the local race for me, but even though I can't stand pool swims, I like it. And as usual, setup events did a bang-up job of organization.

  • Comments: So here's the thing. I made the podium again. That makes 5 podiums in my last 5 races and I used to *never* place in my AG. I've been doing these things off an on since '84...probably 150 tris, and until last year, I never..literally never placed in my AG. But apparetnly something has changed. I know my AG isn't any easier (M40-44 is tough, man). So...it must be my running. I'm still not great...but I'm definitley alot stronger than I used to be. So here's what I've learned: if you want to run faster, sure, running more is a good start. But what you really need to do is just run the hell faster, in training. No charge for that. Also: props to my TNTers. I brough 5 folks to this race, four who had never raced a tri before, and th eother was doing her second. Lindsay won her AG, and everyone else did awesome...all finishing strongly and smiling at th eend. The all rock!
