  • Comments: This was my first Big Kahuna and I just loved it. The venue is great, the courses are awesome, volunteers are superb, and the food at the finish is the best I've ever had (chicken and pork tacos, lots of fresh fruit, no junk food).

  • Comments: I really like this race. The swim is a great swim, I love the bike course, and the run is a good run for me and very pretty. I do feel like they could have used (or I could have used) one more aid station on the run. Not sure where it would go, but at times, moving as slowly as I was, it felt like a long time between aid stations.

  • Comments: Only a couple of complaints - the swim course could be better marked - I couldn't imagine doing well on this course if it were my first open water swim due to the lack of obvious buoys to navigate with. It would be nice for transition to be a little closer to the swim exit point, and maybe a little less sand to run across at the end - but those are minor issues. Overall I thought it was a well run, well organized event with lots of aid staions. The medical tent was very efficient, food options were great afterwards and the entertainment was fun (although I couldn't find a massage tent...)

  • Comments: Great race, and I really feel like this was a perfect fitness check going into IM Cozumel. Now I'm excited for a few more solid months of training and my big race.

  • Comments: I did like watching the hula dancers (through my post race haze). My mom is from Maui, so that was an enjoyable distraction. Overall, race seemed well organized and staffed. Everyone very friendly. I like that the event shirt they gave out is a technical shirt, not just a T-shirt.

  • Comments: This turned into a duathlon. Visibility was poor due to the fog so the ocean swim was cancelled. We started at the swim finish, ran to transition and started our bike.

  • Comments: Needed more bathrooms at start. Too long a run between swim and transition. Don't make people pick up race packets the day before or allow someone else to pick up for them.

  • Comments: They should not have let family and friends in the transition area before the race, they needed more port-o-johns near the transition area. Needed a better photography company (should have had people taking photos by the Tiki on the run). Volunteers at the aid stations were great.

  • Comments: The volunteers were great. The problem was that one water station ran out of bottle and two others ran out of cups.

  • Comments: I really wish they'd had us use neoprene timing chip straps instead of the plastic ones. I'm definitely getting my own strap. Steve's came off in the water during his warmup, and mine ended up cutting into my leg a bit. Providing my own definitely seems like the way to go.

  • Comments: Great race for my first half Ironman. Haven't decided what to do next, but it's still early. My only complaint is I want a better expo. The gear they had for sale sucked.

  • Comments: Awesome race. Perfect "first" HIM for anyone considering going this distance, as the bike is fairly flat and so is the run. And, when the weather is somewhat cool like today, you get fast times. You need to practice cold-water-ocean swimming prior to this race. Its not an absolute requirement (obviously, I didn't); but it would be a big confidence booster. As a bonus, Michellie Jones raced this race today, and we all saw her around the T/A and on the course. Very cool to have the reigning Kona champ at your race.

  • Comments: 1) no. absolutely no porta-potties on the bike course. this is the first time i had to pee my pants. gotta remember to give the bike a shower... 2) if we must run from the swim to the transition area please make sure there's no broken bottles left there from saturday night's orgies. 3) no porta potty at the finish is almost criminal. but mostly - a fun event. i enjoyed it more than i thought i would. the hawaiian hula dancers were first class. wish i could have seen more of them. they were facing away from the finish chute.
