  • Comments: A little frustrated with my run mainly since I have made some big improvements in training this year but haven't been able to carry it over to races. But even with a :15 slower swim and a :30 slower run than last year I was still about 13' faster overall, and the main thing is that I went under 6hrs so I am quite happy. It was also really cool to see BT'ers all over the course especially since I don't have anyone to come and cheer for me. The race was well run as always and it is always fun to have the pros breathing down your neck even if they are on their 2nd lap & you're on your 1st.

  • Comments: The aid stations were done very well. They could have been spread out a bit more since they seemed to be too close to eachother on the first half of the loop, but I'm not really complaining. The bike course is definitely a fast course. If you're looking to PR for a HIM, the course won't hold you back, but the heat could get to you.

  • Comments: Even with the dismal run, I had a great swim, a great bike, and I took 40 minutes off my previous HIM PR, so I am very happy with my over all performance. 5430 Sports always puts on a nice race. Very, very well organized. They did a great job of keeping the aid stations stocked with water and ice on a very hot day, although some were out of sponges on the second lap. I would only change 2 things: 1) more potties on the run; and 2) something else for the finisher's souveniers--um, thanks for the pint glass?!

  • Comments: WEll done 5430 sports and Barry and Jodee Siff. Just awesome on a hot day. Good to see everyone have a super day out there. It was fun seeing everyone on the bikes and in transition. I have never really spectated and got to see all the BT'ers in transition, on the bike or on the run! Very fun day. I think we are doing it as a relay again next year because I am not doing any long course next year.

  • Comments: 5430 Sports had a potential disaster on their hands with today's heat. They did an EXCELLENT job on the run aid stations. Without the ice, sponges, cold water, etc. there would have been a lot more DNFs and people in the med tent. I did think it was funny that they gave out beer glasses at the finish line. Hmmm. Mix glass with exhausted, sweaty, wet athletes and you end up with a lot of dropped, broken glasses. Not smart. But overall, a good race.

  • Comments: Managed to beat last year's time by 30 minutes! That's amazing, and it's all because of Mike Ricci and D3 coaching. There's no way I'm improving like that without their support and guidance. Really a well-run, wonderful, race. Barry's just the king, and this has to be one of the best Half-Ironman events in the country. Two weeks to go before Ironman Kentucky!

  • Comments: The race was OK. Pretty congested in parts of bike and run for a half IM (in my opinion). The road conditions on parts of the run could have been improved for the race. Some road kill on the bike and run could have been removed - aren't we all feeling ill enough at this point in the race? Offer more shade post-race. Aside: I just want to be clear that I'm pleased with how this race turned out. My reports tend to be on the critical side but that is how I develop and learn. I trained hard for this race, primarily. I found a new lifestyle and am in the best shape I've been in in 10 years. I met some of the BT'ers this past weekend and am impressed with their attitudes, comradely , and talents. Now I just need to find out what is next in the wake of my wife threatening to pull her sponsorship. I've got to get an IM in soon!

  • Comments: Gee, 5430 sports really puts on a good event. Absolutely awesome. I was having a fabulous day until lap two of the run. Then life went to hell in a handbasket. Oh well. I've told Mike this is my last race of the season. Time to regroup and get the knee healthy. BUT...I did win the bet. I did the HIM the day after the 10k swim! NEVER bet with me...you're guaranteed to lose!

  • Comments: Did a little faster than what I thought although I was hoping to go under 6 hours. Overall I was surprised with how much of the race I felt good for. It was only the last 3/4 of the bike & run that felt really hard. Considering this time last year my longest run:~3 miles, bike: ~30 miles, swim ~1300m. It's hard not to compare myself to other people I know who are much faster but overall I ran the race I wanted and I'm happy to have a respectable time for my 1st HIM and feel good doing it.

  • Comments: One thing that upset me on the run was that several of the aid stations were hidden around corners and I kept trying to take a gel before I got there only to have the aid station sneek up in me so that I couldn't wash down the gel with water. That's the only complaint I could think of.

  • Comments: Two things. First, if you're going to send out an email that says to respect the neighbors and not pee alongside the road, put some frickin portapotties on the bike course. There were none. Peeing I have no problem doing on the road, but in the beginning when I was bloated and having GI issues I was looking for them more for comfort of knowing they were there if needed. Fortunately that worked out okay. Also, the run course mile markers were weird. Not all the miles were marked and basically nothing for the second lap. Given the organization of the other two events, this is something I'd expect to be right on.

  • Comments: I raced my plan. I knew I would either do it or not on the run, but I stuck to the game plan. All in all I was 8 minutes off my goal - 8 min slower on the run (although if I had been 5 minutes faster on the run, I still would have been pleased!) I was faster on the swim and almost dead on on the bike (really dead on considering my problems mounting and dismounting...) I have to say I am happy over all and I now have a benchmark for this race.

  • Comments: Looking at my overall time, I can't say I'm all that disappointed. I basically expected to go somewhere between 5 and 5:30, and I was smack in the middle. Nevertheless, it's tough to feel good about a race where I wanted to vomit and then curl up and sleep with 4 miles left to run. Just felt aweful. However, it makes me want to train and get better at the endurance/pacing races for next season. Needless to say, I have a lot of room for improvement on my running.

  • Comments: Wow! What a great race! Barry gave away great prizes and I ended up bringing home a Visor, for doing the race, an extra shirt from the series, a case on gatorade endurance, they were giving them away. And a bow of harvest power bars. Great event and well run! Way to go Barry and Jodie.

  • Comments: This is one very cool race. It was sort of fun to be passed by younger athletes all day long. Felt sort of like that old Frogger game, and I'm glad to have avoided being road kill. I'm pleased to have finished Barry's entire 5430 series, and to meet my goals for each race (Sprint under 1:30, Olympic under 3:00, and Half under 6:00). I'm a bit worried that if I keep doing this triathlon thing, other people my age are really going to have a great advantage over me when I quit to take up checkers, as they're really getting much more practice. At the end of the day, this really is an amazing triathlon series, and I will encourage anyone interested in signing up for these things next season.

  • Comments: They didn't have any toilets on the bike ride - I joined several other guys in the trees just off the Diagonal Highway. They had plenty of aid stations that were all very well equiped.

  • Comments: I have a lot of work to do! Next time I attempt a HIM I want to be better trained. Swim, swim, swim! Also bike more! and get the running better too. I can't really say I was putting enough hours in through the last few month before the race. The question is where to find the time to do it?

  • Comments: I will do this one again. I really think I can break 5 hours in the HIM... Part of me thinks I could have today... a few minutes on the swim, and a slightly better run would have gotten me real close. I'm happy though. I think I did good. Cheers, Richard
