  • Comments: Well, for my First Ironman I thought that this race went pretty well with a time of about 15'48' '. The swim was pretty rough and sighting was hard and there were parts of the swim where i had to walk because it was too shallow and i was brushing my fingers against the coral. then after coming around the pier my and about 6 other people swam past one of the turn around buoys and ended up swimming an extra 100 - 150 meters. The transition was pretty smooth and the volunteers there did a very good job. The bike....was for someone who trains in the hills and not with a whole lot of wind resistance pretty brutal for about 50% of the race i was riding more or less straight into the wind (giving i sat up and let the wind push me for the other half), by the time i got to the run i was pretty sore, kudos to the bike aid station volunteers by the way. The run course was Flat ( to be expected of key west) and aside for the fact that I had to power walk half of it, the only problem i think i

  • Comments: I was waiting for the point in the race where my body said no more and I had to tough it out mentally. Everyone talks about it, but I have rarely been there. That happened after about mile 7 of the run. Now I wish I would have been under 12:00:00, but its a 1st IM and a PR so just more reason to come back next year. They did a good job with the event IMHO and with the right conditions, this could be anyones IM PR. Flat course, nice swim and mild conditions. Would be doubtful to see 85 degrees in the Keys in January, but never know.

  • Comments: This is the toughest part of the RR but I don't want to over analyze my feelings about BoneIsalnd. First year races have more than a typical number of issues that could pop up..I had the sense that BI was struggling with the local permitting authorities to a fairly late stage. There was nothing wrong with Set-Up's organization; there was a race course that covered 140.6 miles and as always, the rest is up to you. In looking back at race day nearly two weeks since, I can't really remember much, though, that was especially great and I hate to say it, but Key West might not be the optimal place to stage a long course event. Key West is a lot of fun and a great place to go, so if you wanted to combine a vacation with an extremely early season fitness test, BoneIsland would make a lot of sense. To make the race special, it will take some fine tuning on SetUp's part..

  • Comments: Now that I've had some time to digest my performance I happy with it. At first was so mad at myself especially since I blew a podium spot in my age group. Looking at the results I was still MOP with a terrible run (walk). Mentally I had to push myself to finish and I'm happy I didn;t quit. I learned from my mistakes and end the end I did have fun. I don't think I'll do this race again. I knew there would be some logistic issues being the first year but creating a descent course in Key West is too hard. The swim was too shallow and needed a lot more buoys and volunteers to direct people. The bike was not that bad too me but I heard about cyclist getting stopped at a turn around for up to 10 minutes. I would have lost my mind if they did that to me. The run down Duval St was a disaster. They didn't have the road blocked off and there was no way I was going to run on those narrow streets with traffic. The sidewalks were littered with drunks and tourist so it was juts a big mess.
