  • Comments: I came out in 4th place in the Clydesdale 225+ division. I was happy with that...I think I am very capable of getting into 2nd with a better swim. The race was very well planned and I really liked it. I am glad I did it. There were a ton of volunteers and THANK YOU. Volunteers are what make the race a success. I have a little bye until Dec 4 for the HITS in Palm Springs and starting to do my base for my 70.3 in Oceanside in March 2012. Good times are ahead!

  • Comments: Fun race, great for beginners. Bike course can be narrow at times, be careful when passing and alert others when you're passing/about to pass, slow riders stay to the right.

  • Comments: Great way to end the season. I came into this race with zero expectations because I just raced LA Tri pretty hard last week. This was just going to be a fun little race...and turned out to be a great win to go into the off season. I'm going to work hard on my run over the off season and come back even stronger next year.

  • Comments: I like this event, and I like that it is local and very competitive for me. Some years it's a little too competitive. But then when I think about it, that's what I'm really looking for most in a race, and it certainly keeps me coming back. Frankly, I prefer a longer swim course, a less frantic/crowded bike course (go back to the 2 lap version!), and if the run course is just a straight out & back, then the turn around point should be in the (EXACT!!!) same place every year, to say nothing about year 17. Come on Epstein, you could do a little better on the course design. What's that you say? It's a beginner-oriented race? Really? Oh, well never mind then.

  • Comments: Nice race for newb's like me. The bike course is a bit treacherous because of the 3 loops and traffic, but the rest was nice enough.

  • Comments: Despite my criticism of the bike course, this is actually a great event to end my season with. It's very close to home and the venue is very familiar to me. They always have plenty of volunteers and a lot of locals jump into this just for the fun of it. Still, it’s probably the most competitive race I do all year, as my AG seems to attract some really fast 50-54 year olds every year.

  • Comments: I really enjoyed it. It was more about the social and getting through that ocean swim then racing per se. It's a fun casual race and marketed that way. A really nice event to end the season on and if at all possible I want to do this next year - will be pressuring a couple more friends to join us. There is also a longer race in Malibu in Sept I'm hoping to be the swim leg of a relay! Afterward we went for Mexican food YUM - so canceled out any caloric loss from the race.

  • Comments: I expected to do well in this race, since its the only sprint I've done and my focus is mainly on Olympic/HIM distance races. I've been doing a lot of base building on my run and really worked on my mental focus swimming, since my terrible showing on the swim at Bonelli last weekend. Swim was mentally tough since I was using a long john and the thermocline broke on Friday night, resulting in much colder water temps in SoCal, but I had a great swim regardless of the blue toes and hands. Overall, a very fun and enjoyable triathlon and I'm obviously happy with a 4th AG, 26th overall finish.

  • Comments: I rated this "Best", because it's my one and only. They really went out of their way to stress that this was a beginner's race, and that helped a lot. Good, easy swim. Flat bike course, though somewhat technical. Straight run. Didn't stick around for post race activities, but it didn't look like much was going on other than a few tents on the beach. A shower and more coffee sounded better :)

  • Comments: The pre-race meeting ended 5 minutes before my start time, which made getting used to the water more difficult than it needed to be. The bike course was congested at times. Otherwise, this was a solid, well-run, very fun race. I'll be back next year.

  • Comments: Overall, I'm very happy with my race, but especially so with the run. After enduring a string of lower leg injuries all summer, that kept me out of my A race this year, it is very satisfying to have regained my running fitness, and apparently surpassed it, in the nine weeks I've been back to running. Actually my swim split into T1 may have been faster than last year largely due to a strong run from the ocean to the transition area. My bike time was slower this year, and I've been thinking I've been in denial lately about having lost some of the edge I had in late August/early September, which may indicate that I may have peaked about that time. As usual, the race was well organized, with plenty of volunteers beefed up by the North Torrance High School Cross Country team. This was a great race to finish up the 2007 season.

  • Comments: A great beginner race and a great way to end my first season - on a high note. I was frustrated by the bike course because I wanted to hammer that a lot more, but still, my run time made my day. Not sure if I would do this race again because it was crowded and there was no race day bag! Plus it seemed like most of the people I knew were not racing it. It has been an incredible 10 months since I decided to do my first triathlon and now, no regrets and only goals at this point. Next season I plan on getting on a podium!
