  • Comments: After so many years of chasing Kona, it seemed to blow by in the blink of an eye. It was definitely a special and an iconic race, but I think for me the thing that made it so much more meaningful was having Brad's family and our friends there. They made my day and vacation. I am really proud of the mental state I was able to keep during the race. I wanted to enjoy it and I am happy I was able to race happy the entire day and just enjoy my experience. This was a challenging race and yes it's hot and humid and windy, but it wasn't the hardest race I have done. I am certainly happy I was able to experience it and cross that finish line. For me, I am ok with literally being one and done in Kona, but would definitely go back as a spectator.

  • Comments: My original goal was 11:59 but that quickly faded to 12:30, and unfortunately slipped. Basically the bike smoked me, and I suffered on the run. But to tell the truth, I suffered on all phases of this race, starting with the swim. It was a race finished by sheer determination. Being my 3rd Ironman, the euphoric finish is an exhilaration that never gets old, especially when its Kona World Championship, a dream come true. Although it wasn't the time I wanted or hoped for, it still was the best effort I had in me that day. I am not disappointed with my efforts, as I felt I planned, and executed to the best of my ability. I have no excuses but neither regrets. I am very satisfied with the best day of my life. Finally as a personal note of gratitude, I thank my coach Amy, for sticking with me for all the training, and her incredible support. I truly appreciate her dedication to get me through this great race.

  • Comments: Wow. Kona. I think I actually built up my expectations TOO much. People idolize this race, and the one thing I found was that it isn't the same race when you are in the back of the pack. Other than in the immediate vicinity of the finish chute, the entire race had an air of "I missed the party" to me. Everywhere I went on the course it felt like all the real action had happened long before I got there. No ones fault but my own...I'm the slow one. But I guess I'm saying I didn't feel the utter magic feeling that I was expecting to feel. Is that weird? I dunno. I had a weird feeling all week like I didn't belong here. I didn't expect to feel like that, it's just a vibe I got. I think it went along with feeling like I missed the party all day. I was super-proud of my run split, and SUPER happy not to have a digestive disaster like my previous two Ironmans. I give all the credit for that to Dina...she's been working with me on my nutrition all summer and she's apparently a MIRACLE

  • Comments: Support?! Unreal, the level of support this town gives. The aid stations on the bike and run were absolutely unreal. A huge thank to everyone of those people who when above and beyond. The course is a tough test and I can clearly see why they hold it there.

  • Comments: Volunteers were awesome. Race was awesome. Doing the world championship as my first IM will probably spoil me forever. Now it is time to get to work so I can come back again someday. Even if I never qualify again, I would come back as a volunteer just to immerse myself in this atmosphere again.

  • Comments: This was simply the best of the best. Everything was done with an incredible amount of professionalism and attention to detail. The volunteers were absolutely incredible- I think they took a training course, or something, because they were seriously perfect. The course itself is stunning in its stark beauty. The ocean is the most gorgeous I've been in. The bike course has LAVA, the ocean, the mountains, and a brutal countryside to destroy your spirits. The run course is, well, unrelenting- no really hard climb, just heat, more heat and no escape from the radiating heat, except to lull you into a walk. It's Ironman Hawaii- it is the world championship. The level of talent here blew my mind more than anything else. Every single person is one of the best in the world, and on race day, they really were- everyone was incredibly fast- I am still in awe of the incredible talent at Kona. What an experience!

  • Comments: Well, this wasn't my greatest performance but it wasn't my worst performance either. This is, after all, Kona, and I'm racing with the best in the world in some unbelievable conditions. I kept hearing about the heat and wind and how tough they are. Let's just say the wind didn't disappoint. It was downright scary and I was just happy to stay on my bike. I've already been asked by a few people what's next? The next couple years will be focused on my family as I stick to sprints, Olys, and HIM. My oldest son is a Junior and he'll be off to college in a couple years. I plan on enjoying EVERY football and baseball game. My younger son is in 8th grade and I plan on doing the same with him. And, my wife and I will be enjoying Friday nights and some easy rides together on Saturday mornings. Oh, I'll be racing again in Kona in a few years and when I do my goals will be VERY high. I learned a lot about how to race this course and while the results weren't exactly what I expected I

  • Comments: So, what happened? So many thoughts are going through my head as I commit this to writing 32,000 feet above the Pacific. To begin with, let me address my original time and placement goals as this is the first time I have totally missed the mark. My estimate of a 9:20 to 9:30 finish was based off my IMAZ time vs. Kona in 2007. I was 3 min. faster that year in Hawaii so I felt if I could replicate that, I had a legitimate chance to go sub 9:30. Also, last year 9:22 won the AG. This year, 9:20 was 5th!  I am amazed they went that much faster, although the run course conditions were excellent with not a lot of wind and some cloud cover. I wasn't ready to go that fast this year even on a perfect day. 9:08 won it...good grief. My training this year has been massive to say the least. My race results coming into Hawaii have been the best they have ever been. Everything was looking very good up until I developed the issue's in my right hip/leg. The final 5 weeks of my run training was compromised

  • Comments: The stories were amazing. One was a Canadian, Sean, who had 25% lung capacity--he and I finished within two or three minutes of each other--talked quite a bit on the run. On the bike I yelled at Rudy who was a 20 year old double amputee. He was struggling on the bike, but runs 6 minute miles. I yelled "Hang in there; I look forward to kicking my butt on the run." He smiled and laughed. He missed the bike cut-off by six minutes. He will be back next year. At the finish line he found me and thanked me. It is me who should be thanking him. The 80 year old nun did not make the bike cut-off either nor did the biggest loser contestant winner. Heroes one and all! The next day I talked to the women's winner who is Chrisy Wellington for about five minutes as we waited in line to pick-up our photos. Smart and down to earth. During the close ceremonies she shared that one of her favorite moments was when she was finishing the marathon and got proposed to by a giant banana! This race

  • Comments: It's Ironman World Championship! Of course, it was amazing! Everything from the Parade of Nations and the Welcome Banquet to the Navy Seals and Chrissie Wellignton to the finish line and the Awards Banquet was top notch and a dream come true. What more can I say?

  • Comments: Volunteers and local support is insane before, during and after the race. The entire side of the island was without ice because of the race. They were down to 6 containers of Gatorade once the race was over. Most of the locals said it was one of the hottest races the past few years. Left on Wednesday to come back to CT. First day back it snowed. Wonderful. So while I was disappointed by my time and by not checking position better, I had a ton of fun, and would do it again. NO IM plans until at least 2011. That will be my last year as M25-29 and my daughter will be 5. Better time to go back and take with me.

  • Comments: Best race of my life (as in most enjoyable). SO many volunteers, and I made an effort to thank every single one whom I saw. Without them, Ironman would never take place, and all athletes, whether they know it or not, appreciate the heck out of the volunteers. Most beautiful race, too, I think. In pictures and on videos, I thought the lava fields would be really ugly and mentally challenging to ride 112 miles through, but they ended up being extremely aesthetic and so much fun to ride through. The white coral that people use instead of graffiti to wirte messages on the lava rock was really interesting and beautiful, and the climb up to Havi was also quite beautiful (and the ride down was SUPER fast and really fun!). But the best thing about this race was the omnipresent magic. There is just something about Kona, and about Alii Drive, that reaches out to your triathlete heart and massages and cultivates the dreams that you have held there for so long. Even though I knew all of these

  • Comments: This was it. One of the greatest days of my life. It's amazing when over a thousand hours of training comes together to allow an old goat to rumble 140.3 miles with a smile and tears of joy. This thing really is less of an athletic endeavor and more of a spiritual awakening. I was reborn today, and now I am alive!

  • Comments: Ironman Hawaii Race Report October 13, 2007 Kailua-Kona, Hawaii It’s all about the Journey The journey to the Ford Ironman World Championship was a wonderful ride for me. As most of you know, my wife and I made a trip over to the Big Island three years ago. I had watched the Ironman on TV and had been inspired by the myriad of stories and images of epic human battles, and thought it would be cool to see it “up close and personal” Up to this point, I had not done a triathlon, I was not a swimmer, nor did I have a bike. I was an experienced marathon runner, thus my interest in endurance events. We volunteered that “fateful” day in October 2004, and after witnessing the event, I was “taken up” by its majesty, difficulty, and beauty. I also said to myself, there is no way I could “ever, ever, ever” complete those distances, and of course, I would forever be a spectator for the World Championship. The distances of an Ironman seemed mind boggling to me at that time.
