  • Comments: The stories were amazing. One was a Canadian, Sean, who had 25% lung capacity--he and I finished within two or three minutes of each other--talked quite a bit on the run. On the bike I yelled at Rudy who was a 20 year old double amputee. He was struggling on the bike, but runs 6 minute miles. I yelled "Hang in there; I look forward to kicking my butt on the run." He smiled and laughed. He missed the bike cut-off by six minutes. He will be back next year. At the finish line he found me and thanked me. It is me who should be thanking him. The 80 year old nun did not make the bike cut-off either nor did the biggest loser contestant winner. Heroes one and all! The next day I talked to the women's winner who is Chrisy Wellington for about five minutes as we waited in line to pick-up our photos. Smart and down to earth. During the close ceremonies she shared that one of her favorite moments was when she was finishing the marathon and got proposed to by a giant banana! This race

  • Comments: It's Ironman World Championship! Of course, it was amazing! Everything from the Parade of Nations and the Welcome Banquet to the Navy Seals and Chrissie Wellignton to the finish line and the Awards Banquet was top notch and a dream come true. What more can I say?

  • Comments: Volunteers and local support is insane before, during and after the race. The entire side of the island was without ice because of the race. They were down to 6 containers of Gatorade once the race was over. Most of the locals said it was one of the hottest races the past few years. Left on Wednesday to come back to CT. First day back it snowed. Wonderful. So while I was disappointed by my time and by not checking position better, I had a ton of fun, and would do it again. NO IM plans until at least 2011. That will be my last year as M25-29 and my daughter will be 5. Better time to go back and take with me.

  • Comments: Best race of my life (as in most enjoyable). SO many volunteers, and I made an effort to thank every single one whom I saw. Without them, Ironman would never take place, and all athletes, whether they know it or not, appreciate the heck out of the volunteers. Most beautiful race, too, I think. In pictures and on videos, I thought the lava fields would be really ugly and mentally challenging to ride 112 miles through, but they ended up being extremely aesthetic and so much fun to ride through. The white coral that people use instead of graffiti to wirte messages on the lava rock was really interesting and beautiful, and the climb up to Havi was also quite beautiful (and the ride down was SUPER fast and really fun!). But the best thing about this race was the omnipresent magic. There is just something about Kona, and about Alii Drive, that reaches out to your triathlete heart and massages and cultivates the dreams that you have held there for so long.
