| Here you are, at the next level. This is advanced training for the
serious athlete. Are you ready? I feel it is very important to
combine weight training with triathlon (aerobic) training. Weight training
will build up bone density, strengthen joints and give you that muscular
definition. It's true, I believe that one needs some muscular
definition...to tell you the truth, it looks good.
There has been a lot of recent scientific articles pointing out the
benefits of weight training...check out:

Reasons
Can one combine a triathlon program and a weight training program?
Yes. How much time out of my day will both programs take? 1-2 hours
with 2 days off for triathlon training and 3 days off for weight training.
Will I always be sore? No, triathlon training will not give you any
appreciable soreness after the first few months and my weight training program
will only give soreness to 1-2 muscle groups. Will I feel run-down all the
time and tired? Just the opposite! Weight training immediately
followed by triathlon training will give you lots of energy...I feel like I'm on
a high at the end of both programs. I still have energy left at the end of
the day!!! Of course, one must take great measures to ensure you are
getting plenty to eat...a plenty of carbohydrates for this energy is
required.
My typical training involves weight training first as if you do triathlon
training first, you will have no energy reserves left...unless you do one in the
morning and one at night. I train each body part only once a week to allow
a full recovery for the next week. I go all-out though, having spotters to
push myself to the max every time, to make sure that muscle group will be sore
for the next 2 days...remember, soreness = growth.
*NOTE* - The
programs contained in the following links are essentially a MASS
BUILDING program. The Diet works hand-in-hand with the Weight
Training. Most triathletes just want to strengthen the muscles and
joints NOT build mass as that is usually counter-productive for
endurance. I did this to build muscle. You should
investigate to determine your needs...
I am currently redoing
this part of the site to reflect 'Strength Training' for triathletes.
