Nutrition Question: When are Recovery Drinks Necessary?

Question:

I have been training for sprints only, and now I have my sights set on an Oly next year....which means workouts will become longer. At what point or length of workout is a recovery drink necessary?

Answer:

During triathlon training the body immediately undergoes extreme stress and damage. Depending on the duration and intensity of training, the pain and soreness from a training session may linger for several days. With multiple weekly training sessions creating additive stress on previously damaged tissues, the risk for injury and sub-par performance increases dramatically. Recovery nutrition, in addition to a diet which is balanced in carbohydrates, fat, and protein, is the foundation of a triathlete’s training program.

Immediately after exercise, muscles require proper nutrients to aid in a quick and efficient recovery process. [.....]
