Dr. Mark Klion, NYC Triathlon co-medical director, gives an in-depth discussion on overuse injuries from triathlon training and what do for prevention and healing.

'Injury' articles usually do not get as much attention compared to a 'training' article where workout-related information is discussed.  But this injury article series, I feel, is very important for one to get a perspective on what to be conscious of during your training in order to prevent injuries or to recognize an injury early on so that treatment can immediately get started so that training is not compromised.  All to often as triathletes we probably train too much through an injury only to have it worsen or not go away completely.  If we can only humble ourselves, take the appropriate healing time during the onset, we can get back to training 100% as fast as possible.

In this first part on overuse injuries, Dr. Mark Klion discusses:

  • "Why did it happen to me?"
  • Gradual onset of overuse injuries
  • Equipment as a cause
  • Rest as a treatment option
  • Sleep
  • Type of physician to look for in treatment
  • Mechanisms of injury
  • Weight training as rehab and prevention
  • Injuries of bones, tendons, muscles and ligaments
  • Acute vs chronic injuries
  • R.I.C.E for injury management
  • Activity and equipment modification
  • Stretching and injury prevention
  • Rest and recovery
  • Overtraining syndrome
  • Short and long term rest and recovery
  • Rest and preventing sickness
  • Sleep deprivation
